This is such a great place! It’s down an alleyway (so you don’t deal with taxis and street noise all night) in a trendy neighborhood (Silom), but best of all—it’s completely covered in crazy/awesome art! Why leave your hostel to visit and see beautiful artwork when you’re staying in one? Like most hostels, they have plenty of room options to choose from and an awesome hangout area on the first floor, complete with pool table. An incredibly fun and interesting place that I highly recommend.

As far as hostels go, this might just be the coolest one I've ever seen. This place is bursting with life and color from the inside out. From the street, you can't miss it with its rainbow-colored beams, and from the inside: well, let's just say - your eyes are in for a real visual treat. Murals are painted across the walls, antique odds and ends cover every crevice and a random smattering of furniture and unique combinations come together in a sort of chaos that actually really works. I found myself staring up in awe and saying, "This is SO COOL!" at least 25 times. You just have to see it to believe it! The dorms are super nice, but the private rooms are extra great with collages adorning the ceilings of the bathrooms and showers, little balconies looking out to the street and funky paintings on the walls. The common areas are just as cool and offer a fun area to hang out and meet other travelers.

This place just opened a few months ago (April 2012) and has been written up in some Thai design magazines because it has an interesting concept behind it. The designer wanted to capture the era of aggression between The Red Shirts and The Yellow Shirts, so notice the oil painting of a heart painted in the colors of the Thai flag; there's a bit of yellow and red paint dripping down the center. The couches have throw pillows that are monk robe-orange. On an overhead beam in the entryway there's a painting of politicians and a monkey next to them that's supposed to mean "Politicians are like monkies" because they are always swinging one way and then the next.

There are also non-political design touches like 2,000 Johnnie Walker bottles hanging from the ceiling, a large black and white photo of "Miss Fat Thailand," and old copper bowls for making Thai sweets act as the sink basins on the first floor.

There's also a brightly painted roof top with recycled furniture. But for now it's pretty empty. When I talked to guests who decided to stay at the hostel they usually saw it from another hotel rooftop and decided to come check out what was going on with all the colors and barrels up top.

One negative is that it still kind of smells like paint and because of the lofted ceiling, (it used to be a shop house) the common areas are pretty warm. Another little annoying thing is that you need to get an new internet ID card each day to use the Internet or wireless, and if the doors aren't completely closed in the dorms, an alarm goes off. I know it's for safety, but in practicality you just wake and piss people off with that. Still for 380 bhat for a dorm, that's around $11 U.S., you can stay in a place with some character and for now a little privacy in Silom. And for just one bhat you can get a fortune from a gumball machine at reception.

Also Pamee massage across the street is killer. For 200 bhat, or about $6 you can get a really nice Thai massage. And also across the street there's a great place to get your shorts fixed. Also, there's this one ugly street dog outside who has an under bite and plays with a puppy who towers over him. We named them "puppy" and "under bite," but they did not come or listen to us when we addressed them by those names. I asked the lady on the corner how to say "Puppy" and "Under Bite" in Thai, and they still did not listen to me when I said, "Puppy" and "Under Bite" in Thai, and then I said in English "stop tearing trash bags up and dragging trash up and down the street."

Silom art hostel offers a refreshing punch at design and décor. It really stands out on its own with the use of recycled materials, found objects and colours. For people interested in the recent political upheavals in Thailand I am sure that they would find the stories or meanings behind some of the art very interesting. It was a little quiet when we stayed there but it had only been open for several months at that stage. I am sure it is going to attract a crowd that appreciates design and interesting use of space. The staffs at front desk were really sweet and helpful and I enjoyed the location of the place being just off Silom Road. The roof top is absolutely the best place to hang out. It is your own little, private, colourful junkyard jungle. I loved spending time up there.
