Location, location, location. Ci tornerei volentieri.
Located steps from the Gold Coast on the Near North Side, the Whitehall Hotel has style to spare. Though I definitely felt a European vibe here, the hotel also offers a Chinese restaurant (Mei’s Corner) in addition to its Italian eatery (Forentto Mei). Elegant touches can be found throughout, and the slate-hued rooms don’t feel dated at all.
A nice bonus is the Whitehall Place Lounge, which is located downstairs and was apparently frequented by the Beatles at one point. Cocooned in dark wood, the dimly lit lounge is the kind of place I would wear a three-piece-suit to.
The Whitehall isn't the most impressive place visually (at least from street level), but it's a solid, nice hotel. The rooms have been recently renovated; the sheets and towels are high quality, and the bedding is beautiful. I felt comfortable in the room right away.
Some oddities: there are 3 phones in every room (why?!) but wifi isn't free. And you can have your shoes polished overnight.
Great location, really close to Rush Street (excellent for night owls who want to see and be seen) and Michigan Avenue.
The Whitehall hotel was recently remodeled, so the rooms are very nice. A good rule of thumb for this place, I was told by someone at the front desk, is that the higher you stay, the quieter the atmosphere. Another perk to staying higher up – better views of the city. It also might be worth it to spring for the master suites, as they have balconies, living rooms and dining areas. But I thought the standard was open enough and well furnished. You do have to pay for WiFi. There’s a 24 hour fitness center, with all the basics. The Whitehall also has two beautiful restaurants on the first floor, one Asian, one Italian. Their business center is also open 24 hours, which is useful when you need a printer. It’s also in a pretty central location, being next to the Magnificent Mile.
This hotel just finished a multi-million dollar renovation, and it shows. One of the city's tallest buildings when it was built in 1928, the Whitehall has been updated with contemporary decor infused with Eastern elements. Be sure to ask for a room with an view facing east so you can take in the sights of Michigan Avenue and the Hancock Tower. For authentic Chinese, try the in-house restaurant, Mei's Corner.
There isn't much of a lobby area in The WhiteHall Hotel so when a rush of guests come in, it can be quite crowded and you may be stuck standing for a while. The staff does their best to get everyone through quickly. Cherelle was particularly efficient and helpful.
Metallic, bronze duvets and textured walls bring an extra air of luxuriousness to the bedrooms of the hotel and the whole dark color scheme makes it feel extra cozy.
The Whitehall Hotel offers two restaurants for guests to choose from, Fornetto Mei and Mei's Corner. Both have beautiful decor and offer delicious Pan-Italian and Chinese food respectively. If neither of those tickle your fancy, your just steps away from Michigan Avenue and all of the restaurants and shops along the Magnificent Mile.
I like the style of Whitehall much better than Seneca, it's also an older hotel but the style is a little bit more modern than Seneca. It's definitely worth your money if you are to pay the same for the Whitehall or the Seneca.
The only reason they are up for comparison is because they are both within steps of the Hancock center and they are both very historical buildings. However, Whitehall just renovated it to be a little more modern and a little less creaky than Seneca. The lobby still retains its old world flair but the rooms have been updated to have plush beds and nice bathrooms.
This is the perfect spot for a secret weekend getaway because it makes you feel like you have been hidden away, yet are steps from Michigan ave!
