Stay at your own risk!

As per my heading, I would highly recommend that if you go visit this hotel then you need to crib to get a good stay here. Our trip started off as a very stressful one! We reached the hotel and the staff was so RUDE, NON-WELCOMING, this was our first turn off. They welcomed us as if they were giving us the room for free. We noticed that other hotels in Hawaii were so welcoming, they used to greet their guests with garlands, polite words unlike this RUDE HOTEL STAFF! We didn't know that it was just the beginning, worst was yet to come. We reached our room and it stink as if a RAT just died there. The room entrance was all damaged and the room was not even worth a DOLLAR! The bathroom tub was all scratched out. I have attached the pictures as a proof to this. Our first night was so stressful that we regretted our decision to stay and pay around $200 at that hotel. I couldn't take it, I went to the hotel staff and told them that if the hotel was in that condition then they shouldn't be selling out their rooms, the pictures on their website are so deceptive. To that the staff was RUDE again! She told us, we can move to another room but tomorrow we will have to move again and she said all that with so much of an attitude as if she was doing us a HUGE FAVOR! I am sure if I would make her sleep in that stinky, ugly room she won't stay there for free! The next day I had to beg the girls at the reception again to change my room as we were on our HONEYMOON And they are spoiling it for us and they need to do something about my room... After asking 100 times, they finally gave us a penthouse room. Then we understood that they have a few good rooms that they advertise on their site but once you come in they put you into a SHIT HOLE! And you literally have to beg the rude staff to get a room there...
That was not all, they told us that they will be charging us $10 every day for the internet that NEVER works, water the FIRST DAY ONLY (water costed a dollar) and phone calls that I didn't need coz I live in the states and had my own phone internet. So basically those $10 per day were for nothing... Just their way to rip you off. I stayed there for 7 days and paid $70 for no good reason.
Also, they have $25 for valet parking and their great valets, broke down our rented car and since we were in no mood to talk any further with these hotel people. We left and paid the rental services!
I strongly felt that these guys discriminate us with the rest of asians who were staying in the hotel. I never write any bad reviews but this one I had to warn my fellow travelers. That's why I would recommend that STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK! We had the worst experience ever.

The Waikiki Gateway Hotel is a good place to stay if you're looking for someplace affordable in Waikiki. I marked the price as average, but I think that as far as Waikiki goes, this place is more affordable than other places. First impression when we walked into the lobby, was that this was a fancy hotel. The room did not live up to the same standards, and if you're expecting luxury at the price you pay for this hotel, you will be disappointed. However, the room was clean and very acceptible. As far as other amenities go, there is a computer center, but no pool, the only store attached to the restaurant is an ABC store, and there was a small restaurant that we never went to. While good, it doesn't compare with some of the other hotels on Kalakaua Avenuen.

The biggest disadvantage to this hotel is its location. Located at more of the "gateway" to Waikiki, you have quite a distance to walk to get to any of the hot spots in Waikiki. They advertise as being three blocks from the beach, and technically they are, but not the part of the beach that has all of the people and activity. You can take this as a positive as you have more beach space for yourself than you would in other areas, however, the ocean in the nearest part of the beach to the hotel is rather rocky.

The question is if I would stay at this hotel again. It comes down to price versus convenience, and for the most part, the price is going to win. So, I would stay at another hotel in Waikiki if it was the same price as the Gateway was.

Waikiki Gateway’s a budget hotel somewhere in transformation from old to new. The petite lobby’s now a sleek entryway, but many rooms are still old school and a tad tired, although clean. Straddled at the split between Waikiki’s two main traffic arteries, west-facing rooms look straight up Kalakaua Avenue and overlooks traffic—but it’s a weirdly appealing urban view that I’d recommend. Corner rooms have two balconies, each facing a different side of the city. There is a small swimming pool at the hotel, but it’s cute and has a fun mini waterfall you can actually park yourself under. One plus about the west-end-of-Waikiki location is that Ala Moana Center and the convention center are both reachable within a 15-minute walk. The beach is about two blocks away, good shopping and dining begin less than two blocks away and a lovely tree-filled park is almost across the street. A large sports bar called Bamboozle has opened on the property, and it's okay for some darts or pool playing, but not very happening.

The hotel lobby has a contemporary feel and I was immediately greeted by friendly hotel staff when I walked into the hotel. Even while I wandered around the hotel grounds, the staff would smile and say hi to me. The hotel is located towards the beginning of Waikiki but is within walking distance of all the main attractions such as Waikiki Beach and the Waikiki Beach Walk that is filled with restaurants and places to shop. This hotel is a budget hotel so the rooms are a bit outdated but clean. The pool is small but has a cool waterfall feature. There is also a business center where you can use their computers and internet. There is a daily all you can eat breakfast buffet from 6:30am-9:30am for $9.99. Right next to the hotel lobby entrance there is an ABC store which is convenient for grabbing snacks and beverages to take up to the hotel room.

Waikiki Gateway is a budget hotel. And like many budget hotels, it could use a little upgrading. First off, the rooms are drab. They're sufficient for a low-rate hotel, but certainly nothing to write home about. Corner rooms, however, have one small perk: two balconies. These outdoor decks face different ends of the city: one offers up views of Waikiki Beach, the other looks out over the high rises extending toward the east side of Waikiki. The on-site restaurant here has been shuttered for years, but don't expect the decaying space to reopen under a new name anytime soon. The closed restaurant is considered a historic site, according to a hotel staff member, and therefore it must remain as is. The pool here is small, but it has a cool little waterfall that's perfect for splashing around in. Other perks include a laundromat, valet parking, all-you-can-eat breakfast for $9.99 and Bambooze sports lounge (read: pool table, dart boards and big screen televisions). Finally, before you book, it’s important to take note the location of this hotel. It’s set on a very busy throughway in Waikiki’s west end, which is quite a walk from popular attractions like the International Market Place, Diamond Head and Duke’s Waikiki. On the other hand, it’s just a block from the tranquil waters of Waikiki Beach and within walking distance of the convention center.

The hotel lobby welcomes you with a newly renovated, soothing and contemporary design. Unfortunately not all the rooms are at the same level yet. Although comfortable and adequate, the mid-priced room in this budget hotel was quite outdated. But it was a nice sized corner unit with two lanais, one overlooking the entrance to Waikiki, which dazzled at night, and the other viewing Kuhio Avenue, but not quite high enough for the mountain view. There’s a small pool with a flowing waterfall, a spa and a complimentary business center, but a daily fee for internet room access. They have onsite laundry facilities and there’s a convenience store downstairs. Nice location at the start of Waikiki, so there’s less congestion, but everything is within walking distance and the city bus stops just outside the hotel, going through Waikiki towards Diamond Head.
