This McMenamins is set in a North Portland's industrial but up and coming neighborhood, and just down the street from the Widmer Brewery. I came here for a light lunch of Imperial IPA and tasty soup. I didn't check out the Hotel or get a chance to hear live music, but I'll probably be back for one or both.

The White Eagle Cafe and Rock 'n' Roll Hotel building kind of reminds me of the Peerless Hotel in Ashland. Both are refurbishments of a similar looking historical Hotel and with a lot of classic touches. I naturally gravitate to these kind of places, and the somewhat standard McMenamin's model doesn't bother me a bit.

History exudes from every corner of the White Eagle saloon, so it’s definitely an attraction that should be explored. Erected in 1905, this Portland haunt is now known for its vintage charm, frenetic ambiance and rock n’ roll revelry. As it is set in North Portland’s industrial district, the White eagle is off the beaten path, so getting there would require a bicycle or some form of motor vehicle. Its loyal clientele is usually a little older, but a warm sense of welcome attracts the younger generations as well. Food is nothing to write home about and the drinks are standard with regards to quality and abundance, but whatever it lacks in food and drink it more than makes up for in musical performance. If you're one for rock n’ roll, blue grass, country and indie music then consider huffing it over to the White Eagle for a night of foot stomping and finger licking.

Ask any Portlander what the most haunted spot in town is, and chances are that she will point you in the direction of the White Eagle. This old-school tavern and lodge was built in 1905 and was once a brothel. It still has an old-time lodge feel to it that harkens back to Portland's past as a logging and port community. It’s gone through considerable changes since it’s early days, and is now operated by the McMenamin family, who own a slew of excellent brewpubs across the Willamette Valley. The 11 simple rooms here are all on one floor and share a couple of common bathrooms. In the true McMenamin’s style, there are murals on the walls of the common areas and hallways, as well as photos from the hotel’s salubrious heyday. The cleaning staff here report the occasional encounter with the resident ghouls. Their advice: if a ghost bothers you, ask him politely to leave you be and he’ll vanish back into the ether.

Along with 3 other disgusting smelling, cross-country, post-graduation companions, I had the absolute pleasure of staying the White Eagle. We were looking to "splurge" and stay at a cool hotel, though are budget didn't really allow it, and the staff generously let us pack into one of the upstairs rooms (probably happy to get us showered up before we patronized the bar). The staff was awesome... hip, friendly, and overall everything we hoped to come across our first night in Portland, OR. Our room was nothing less than charming, in an old-timey, comfortable way. The bands that night threw down some amazing indie-folk rock, and the crowd was perfect! Highly recommend on all bases if you're looking for an authentic Portland music scene and great place to crash - whether you're a grimy 22 year-old or a seasoned traveler looking for something a little off the beaten path.

If you are looking for a slice of Portland's "ancient" history in which to immerse yourself, the White Eagle Cafe Hotel & Saloon maybe a place to stay for a night or two.

The hotel, located in the riverside industrial area of North Portland, was once a brothel and reputedly involved in the notorious shanghai practice of the 19th and early 20th Century waterfront.

The narrow dark hallway to the bedrooms has a ghost so I am told, which adds to the hotel's appeal and notoriety, as do the dark rooms and non-existent amenities (there is no wash basin in the 'off suite' bathroom).

Although the hotel is clean, the appointments and decor are really only for those with a sense of adventure and a desperate need to visit the 19th Century. The staff were very friendly and proud of the history and old appointments of the hotel, but for someone who likes modern standards this may not be a good place for you!

If the Hardrock Cafe had a dirty little brother it’d be The White Eagle Cafe. It’s antiquated exterior and inviting outdoor seating area make it look like just another cool hole-in-the-wall eatery in Portland but, like any rocker, leather pants can only take you so far. The inside solidifies it’s grooviness and proves just how long and narrow the building is-with the restaurant portion first and the stage on the other end. Pictures and news clippings of the joint line the walls, slapping you in the face with how long it’s been a haven for the playin’. The eleven rooms upstairs comprise the “hotel” portion, where the rooms are small, simple, clean, and well taken care of. I wouldn’t expect to get much sleep with the noise, but the experience, not sleep is the point. Rock on.
