"Took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." ~ Robert Frost

Lost in paradise. What set out to be a 3 hour hike turned into a 6 hour adventure. Completed the intended route but got tempted to head up "just a bit more" the 3 of us thought. Reached the peak it was all worth it but it's the way down that got us. Without proper hiking equipment, we were advised by other hikers to take another route down. Half way through, we came to a dead end. No one was in sight but miraculously a local couple, frequent hikers at Bukhansan appeared out of nowhere (phew!) & got us out. It was late April & the spring flowers were still in full bloom. Perhaps, being lost in a beauty like this made everything easier. Weather was cool, we had our light jackets on. Thankful for the day, for the kind souls we met. Stick to the route may be the lesson here but the road less travelled has much to give too

Bukhansan Mountain National Park is an ecological island inside Seoul and a spiritually important mountain for locals. The best part of this park is that it’s accessible from anywhere in the city by public transportation. Bukhansan National Park is divided into two areas with Uiryeong Pass in the middle: Bukhansan Mountain to the south, and Dobongsan Mountain to the north.

Hiking is a very important part of Korean culture. It may surprise some to know that despite living in one of the most densely populated countries in the world, Korean's will make extra effort to be outdoor enthusiasts. Plus, who wouldn't want to take advantage of pointy mountains surrounding your backyard?
Bukhansan is an easy train ride out of Seoul and even the modest hiker can make it up for some pretty awesome views(assuming the fog/smog is low).

The national park in Seoul's backyard, Bukhansan is a gem - the place to get away from the city's relentless concrete landscape and get a taste of nature. Accessible by subway (!) this wilderness area north of the city has a host of different hiking courses taking in the various summits, but two of the best are the route summiting Baegundae, the park's highest peak; and the path up to Jaunbong - both feature some exciting scrambling and cables at the top. The park gets ridiculously crowded on weekends, so unless you fancy hiking in a queue, try to go during the week. Koreans will tell you that you haven't really been to the country until you've been to the mountains, so lace up your boots and go!

Very few cities can boast of a national park just a short bus or subway ride away from the city. Bukhansan is a beautiful, easy access place to hike. The downside of this is that you will not be alone. It’s better to avoid the weekends and public holidays if at all possible. There’s a huge variety of hikes, ranging from easy valley walks to scrambles over rocks that are only possible because of pre-installed ropes. There are multiple entrance points, Gubapal being one of the easiest- leave the subway and look for the massive line of people waiting for a bus up!

Hiking in Korea is an event. Korean hikers swarm the mountains like ants. They are attired for a K2 or Everest summit, meaning they have the best of gear. Hiking in Korea can be a bit overwhelming, but fun.

A must visit in Seoul! Views are great, and it's a great work out on any trail you follow.

Nice view from the top and a few monasteries and temples along the way up. To get to Bukhan Mountain, take Line 1 to Dobongsan Station; Exit 2, then walk across street until you hit the trail head.

Some people get bored after about a half hour of treking up the incline. I listened to a 3 hour lecture on my iPod from bottom to top and back down again. No problem.
