Viru Street is one of the busiest in Tallinn’s old town, with restaurants, bars and shops flanking both sides. At the foot of the street is Viru Gate, which was originally part of the city’s old defence system and was built back in the 14th century. The towers that form the gate are often tourists’ first glimpse of the old town, before walking up Viru Street to eventually reach Town Hall Square.
At the eastern end of the Old Town, Viru Street is one of the main pedestrian arteries of historic Tallinn and as a result the most touristy area of the city, after Town Hall Square.
