The headquarters for National Geographic Magazine and TV is located in downtown DC and the office building is one wild place. The first floor houses a museum dedicated to all things adventurous. Rotating exhibits and a 3D movie screen with special engagements make this under the radar museum worth checking out.

Close to Dupont Circle and Farragut North metro stop, the museum is relatively small and the exhibits are always changing, but are often interesting. Many are often free as well. Check out their website before going to make sure that there is something that you are interested in seeing.

The National Geographic Museum is located in the Dupont Circle Neighborhood. This museum is ofter skipped because it does require payment to get in, about $15 person. However, this is also one of the best museums in Washington DC and rarely crowded as it is not on the mall and not free. I am telling you it is worth it. The museum is lined with the most stunning photographs and artifacts from around the world. You will feel like you are entering an adventure just by being in there. You are surrounded by the life lines, gear and tools that modern day explorers used, it is one of the most incredible feelings you can have. Since the crowds are minimal here you can take longer to look and read everything without the obnoxious child running up to the glass to put their grubbing little hands all over everything. You can enjoy and appreciate what you are looking at. This is perfect whether you are a current student, or someone who looks at life like a giant classroom, allow yourself to be awed at the National Geographic Museum.

Some interesting info and pictures about the founding and history of the National Geographic Society and Magazine. Kind of small, probably not worth the $11 adult admission. National Geographic subscribers can get in for $9. Just mention that you are a subscriber and they will give you the rate.

We got admissions for two to both the Flying Monster 3D showing (narrated by David Attenborough) and admission to the museum for about $20 on LivingSocial. After showing up at our pre-registered showtimes, we were handed a pair of ultra-cool 3D (spy-)glasses and headed for the building hosting the theater (through the back of the main museum building). There is an photography exhibition there on Tigers, Lions and Bears. The photographs on display are absolutely breathtaking, capturing every aspect of these creatures in their natural habitats: playful and cuddly tiger cubs, vicious fight for survival between lions, and the fishing skills of bears. I discovered something magical here, photographs of spirit bears! At first glance, these bears looks like misplaced polar bears in jungle, but they are actually white black bears. A naturally occurring paradox. They are endangered numbering at 400 and the photographs captures these mythic bears in their hauntingly beautiful forms among the greens of the forests. The 3D movie was engaging and informative, about the evolution of the first flying reptiles - dinosaurs and a journey that goes from fossil evidence from reconstructions of the evolution of flight timeline.

Back to the main building for the two exhibitions, the first of which starts in the back illuminated hall of photography - collection of cover photography from issues of the entire (?) national geography dating back to early inception. What's better than stunningly unique, high resolution with brilliant colors? Hundreds and thousands of them in the same visual space. It was absolutely mesmerizing. After spending a fair of amount of time there carefully observing each photograph and touching the panels containing them as if that transmit more of its artistic emotions (and the very best thing about not having electronic displays instead of paper), we moved onto exploring other parts of the museum. There is a section recounting stories the writers and photographers on their assignments, where we learned about the not so glorious and admittedly dangerous missions which enabled the production of the incredible photos and stories that's second to none. We walked through the halls exhibiting more of these stories in the forms of wall panels accompanied by the never-seen fruits of hard work and persistence. There are also opportunities to interact and learn about them, including an xbox kinect which we spent way too much time having fun being a virtual bear slapping away at bee hives and defending our prey from hungry wolves. There is also a second exhibition on display - Women of Vision, but unfortunately, I dropped our ticket somewhere along the way so we did not get to enjoy that.

I wasn't very impressed. There wasn't a lot to see. They had one exhibit inside and one outdoors. We didn't have to pay anything to view them though.

We saw two exhibits when we visited in 2011:The Etruscans: An Ancient Italian Civilization and one about the race to explore the North Pole.
