Great meal in the Bostro

We have had mixed experiences with the Vue Grand over the 5 years we have lived in Queenscliff.
We haven’t dined in the Bistro for some time.
A recommendation from a friend encouraged us to try the Bistro again.
We did today for lunch.
It was great.
The service ( thanks Julia) was great.
The food was great.
We had 2 starters each all of which we shared
Calamari; baby octopus; Whitebait and Arancini
All were delicious
We highly recommend a visit

Great hotel in an awesome location

Beautiful old building full of charm and character. Our host was most accommodating in upgrading our room to make our 20th anniversary celebration even more special. Thank you!

Great place for an overnighter But...paint smell has to go

It has always been on the bucket list, such a grand hotel with so much history, but up until now we had never gotten around to staying there. So we decided to sneak off for a night and see what the place was like. It is a stunning place with all the old charm still present. If only the walls could talk. Anyway we arrived, around 2.30 pm and parked in Hobson street right next to the hotel where there is no time limit.
Booked in and received a cheery/friendly welcome. We stayed in room 39 (on the first floor) which was overall fine (think we payed $210 for the night or thereabouts) Probably a bit over priced for what it is, but having said that I can understand the upkeep that would be required to keep the place looking good. The room was spacious enough for us, small telly but that was ok, bed was one of those made up of two beds joined together, comfy enough. The shower was good. Everything was clean and in good nick. Main problem we encountered unfortunately was it smelt like it had recently been painted. Not sure if it was just our room or also others on the first floor. But my wife has a serious lung disorder, and it really effected her. We ended up opening a window to try and get some fresh air in for the night. Which again was a bugger because it was a bloody cold night. I thought most paints now were odour free, but maybe not that sort for this type of place. We had dinner down in the restaurant and that was very nice. Lovely lady waitressing, explained all the meals. For the entree we settled on some duck spring rolls (3 for $20) and they were good. Mains were fish and chips for my missus and I had the Port Arlington Mussels, done in a peanut type broth, with a couple of toasted bread. Both meals were good and well worth the reasonable price. Luckily, we try and pay with that good old fashioned thing called cash, where ever we go, and it came in handy this time because the machine that takes the credit cards wasn't working, causing a bit of concern to the waitress. Overall we are very happy we have ticked it off the bucket list, but only downside was the paint smell unfortunately.

Hotel Vue Grand Disappointment

5th time in staying in this old beauty. I swear we go just coz this hotel in it's day must have been fabulous. No b'fast offered in deal. Good job Salt Bush cafe is opposite.
Staff are underwhemingly cold and disinterested. Never stayed anywhere we've never been welcomed back. Even the rooftop bar is byob. Used to be open with bar service back in the day. Love Queenscliffe, looking forward to Hotel Queenscliffe opening later this year.

A fire hazard

A fire hazard. My husband uses a mobility scooter. When I booked the room (previous November) I was advised that there were no disabled rooms but that we could get access from the car park at the rear and we could be provided with a larger room and bathroom. There are 3 or 4 bluestone steps at the front door. When we arrived we couldn’t find the rear door so I rang reception and they said they would come and open it We eventually found it up a rough side path. We then went out to the function we had come to Queenscliff for. When we returned at about 4.55pm the door was once again locked. Reception closes at 5.00pm so luckily we were in time to get it unlocked again. We were advised that no breakfast is provided by the hotel and we couldn’t borrow a toaster. The next morning we decided to go across the road to a cafe for breakfast at 8.00. The door out to the rear was locked so that my husband was unable to get out. I rang the overnight “emergency” number which went to message bank and i am still waiting for a response. Eventually we decided to try to manhandle the scooter and my husband down the front steps which we succeeded in doing. What if there had been a fire? I’m surprised they have a licence. Unimpressed to pay $318 for a not very clean 1970s style bedroom and bathroom. Wouldn’t recommend regardless of your fitness.

It is disappointing you did not raise any of your concerns with Management when you were staying but rather chose to write an inaccurate review on line.
As advised at the time of booking, we do not have disabled rooms at the historic Vue Grand, however you still chose to book and we (unfortunately) went out of our way to try and accommodate your requests. The rough side path you refer to is the Council owned pathway, not part of our hotel. You were provided with the 24 hour onsite Manager’s after hours phone number if required. You were correctly advised that we do not provide breakfast in the hotel and our rooms are not self-contained (ie cooking facilities). We do not offer guests toasters as they would be one appliance that would set off a smoke alarm! Had you looked at the framed fire escape plan on the wall in your room, you would have noticed that there is a designated fire escape which is wheelchair accessible 24 hours per day. Again, had you taken the time to ask, if you were so concerned, we could have resolved your concern immediately. The hotel has monthly fire inspections from a registered authority and is fully compliant. It seems you would be better suited to a modern hotel as you clearly have no appreciation of our historical 1881 hotel. Disappointing to read your ignorant comments and I regret we accepted your booking which we would not be doing in future.
