Exceptional Experience in Native Cabin
The best thing about Solomon Shelter is the people who serve you, have excellent Service, care about the well-being of guests, help you coordinate the activities you can do, even helped me negotiate with Service Providers a better price and schedules for some activities, because my group was so small.

Great experience in the town of Termales
They charged us 75,000 COP per person directly and alone when we came by express transportation, and when we left on the community boat 55,000 COP per person with many people and with stops.
The town is noisy because people party with loud music, but I think the rest of the positive things counteract this.

**Salomon Refuge Cabins: Waves, Whims and the Wisdom of Wilde**
But as I emerged from the shores of Cabañas Refugio Salomon, an epiphany came over me. It's true that one can ride waves, but to truly harness their magic, one must synchronize with the pulse of the shores they touch. And in the midst of this realization another emerged: the search for the perfect wave would always be elusive without the presence of my radiant wife, Yveline, and our creative genius son, "The Artist."
Upon settling into this coastal retreat, a young man named Sebastian caught my attention. With wisdom beyond his years, he skillfully translated for the hotel's venerable owner and offered his assistance to the gracious women who lovingly tended the seaside hotel. Through their translations, stories of times, stunning sunsets, and fish dinners that tasted like the soul of the Pacific were shared, all at a humble price.
With each waning day, the coasts taught a lesson: the quest was not just about chasing waves, but about understanding the stories and people of the coast, and realizing the importance of valuing those we hold dear.
One night, with the Pacific as our silent confidant, I found solace in the conversation. We speak of feelings of alienation, not only from this earth but in the midst of the vast expanse of humanity. Through Sebastian's translations, the wisdom of place was shared, suggesting that home was not just a geographical point but a state of resonance with the rhythm of life.
Cabañas Refugio Salomon, with its luxurious embrace, was undeniably a balm for the soul. But deeper were the epiphanies, the shared sunsets and the longing for the embrace of my dear family.
As the inevitable shadow of departure fell, parting with this Pacific paradise, its owner full of stories, the devoted women of the hotel and the memories of the "ape man" weighed heavily. But, in true Wilde fashion, I reflected, “Parting is sweet sorrow.” Within this pain I carried a silent oath: to return, not only by the waves, but enriched by the stories they whispered and the bonds forged.
For every soul seeking solace, waves and wisdom, I recommend Cabañas Refugio Salomon. Here, perhaps you will discover more than the call of the ocean, perhaps a lesson in life, love, and the lasting footprints of family.
With a heart full of waves and whims,
Tom, the New Yorker who looked for a wave but found a world waiting.

Think Twice before heading to Nuqui - and beyond to Termales...
However, given that the cost of staying here is equivalent to a 5-star hotel in Medellin or Bogota, we feel compelled to share some of the things we wish we had been aware of about the region in general and this hotel in particular before we went. If we had known about these, we probably would never have made the (difficult and expensive) journey...
- The guesthouse is little more than a glorified backpacker dormitory with separating walls that don't even reach up to the tin roof, and so there is absolutely no sense of soundproofing or privacy. If you're a student used to communal living, that's fine - but at these prices it's fair to expect at least a room to call your own.
- The food is limited and not at all nutritious (or even very healthy)...plus there's no alternative option to speak of in the village - so they have a monopoly. While the staff at the hotel are pleasant (and they certainly work hard), the diet is starch, starch and more starch. Plantain with that rice? Tapioca with that potato? Certainly. Fresh fruit or vegetables? Forget it. And yet just across the road (not to mention on all the trees around) fresh fruits grow in abundance and veggies are not difficult to find in Nuqui town, a frequent boat-ride away. If the place can keep its stock of beers constantly high (and they replenished their supplies at least twice while we were there), then there's no excuse for not providing guests with fresh veggies.
- Infrastructure is in a poor state: the roof leaked during the very frequent heavy rain storms, the drains (and, hence, bathroom sink and toilet) smelled very bad. In addition, the shower drain didn't actually drain properly, and we only narrowly avoided a huge flood in the room after a single shower.
- While the staff at Salomon's were friendly enough, the general tone of those in the village as a whole was definitely very unfriendly. Unlike everywhere else we've been in Cololmbia, where warm smiles and friendly interactions are the norm, nobody seemed remotely interested in even nodding acknowledgement to visitors and the sense was even one of wariness, even outright hostility. It's hard to know or say what the history and context of this is - but it is something any potential visitor should know in advance, as this region certainly is an exception to the usual wonderful welcome that is commonplace in the rest of the country.
- Finally, be aware that the time when the whales come is the rainy season. Of course, this is nobody's fault and is just mother nature...but it does mean that entire days can be (and often are) unsuitable for whale-watch trips (as visibility is zero) and even going for a walk on the beach isn't pleasant. The alternative? Go to the hot springs (which are wonderful) or sit in the uncomfortable plastic chairs at Salomon's. Make sure you take something good - and long - to read, otherwise the hours will drag.
All in all, the experience at Salomon's - and in this coastal region as a whole - would definitely fall under the category of a 'dud' choice that we would absolutely not repeat. I'm not sure that we'd even recommend opting for one of the more expensive lodges, as we took a walk to three or four of the ones north and south of Termales and the attitude of the staff was no more welcoming than the people in the village...in fact, it was actively unwelcoming and certainly not in the least bit helpful when we asked about dining options.
Our advice? Save your money and put it towards a trip to Cano Cristales or one of Colombia's many other natural wonders where tourism is much more established, everything works, people are friendly and the experience is truly enjoyable. Our experience was that none of the above apply in the Nuqui region.
