A magical place!

Trogon Lodge is magical! It is in the mountains, with a river running through the resort, and the boulders and rushing water were so wonderful. It is so quiet and peaceful. They have a few nice hiking trails and a bird-watching tour to see Quetzels. They have a lovely restaurant that provides all your meals. The staff was very good, especially the new resort manager. The rooms are cozy little cabins perched on the side of the mountain. This was a thoroughly delightful visit.

Lovely tranquil setting

The setting of Trogon Lodge is lovely, the gardens tranquil and the bar and dining room cosy and atmospheric. The log cabin rooms are very homely although they could do with elec sockets near the bed. We loved sitting on our verandah and in the gardens watching hummingbirds at work. The food is good but main courses, except the pizzas, are too small. The Soda just down the road is worth a visit for good value food. The Quetzal quest was not good value for money. It felt like the guide simply wanted to get a sighting for us but didn’t interact with us or tell us about the birds. Expect to see a LOT of people trying to see these elusive beauties.

We were hoping for more.

On our trip from Chirripó to Turrialba, we stopped at Trogon Lodge. The whole complex is nicely decorated and extremely well maintained. On this point, we can only join the previous speakers. The front desk staff is nice and accommodating. Originally, Bungalow No. 21 was planned for us. This is where the drama began: As it should turn out, the facility does not have a comprehensive WLAN. You have to let that melt on your tongue: In 2026, a hotel will have Wi-Fi access only in the common areas (front desk, restaurant and bar). Through our own investigations we were able to determine that we are at the level of the lower bungalow no. 7 and 8 had Wi-Fi. Essentially, however, this focused on the area in FRONT of the bungalow; inside the bungalow, the matter was difficult to say the least. Nevertheless, we were offered a change from Bungalow No. 21 to No. 8.
Next point of criticism: The single glazing of the dwelling. The hotel complex is located deep in the valley, nestled left and right in mountains. So here it gets cold - to the surprise of all involved - at night. Nevertheless, it seems that no money is taken into hand to invest in proper glazing. Instead, the bungalows provide residents with a mini-oven and hot water bottles. Oh, hell! Unfortunately, neither could help in the bathroom: This was as cold as an unheated bathroom in Germany at Christmas time. A warm shower could help with the cold. But blow cake: We stopped the shower or cancelled it completely. Ten seconds of boiling hot water were followed by freezing cold. It was simply impossible (!) to permanently regulate the shower temperature to an acceptable level. The a la carte breakfast was also a disaster. The restaurant: Cold. Of only five food offerings anyway, one of these was not available, although we were on site right at the start of breakfast time (7am). The scrambled eggs we ordered later consisted (probably) of two eggs, which were accompanied by two slices of bacon, which had to be ordered at an extra cost. Such a breakfast does not make a grown man.
Long story short: At first glance, Trogon Lodge seems like a great place to stay. But once you look behind the scenes, the escape reflex takes hold. We were glad to leave the facility again the next morning.

A truly beautiful place, well laid out in a mountain valley. The atmosphere is welcoming and the restaurant is excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only minor suggestion for improvement would be to install Wi-Fi extenders to all the rooms. Our room was towards the back of the property and we lost the signal just before reaching it.

Exceptional

Not to be missed... the place is simply sublime! It will remain a magnificent discovery. It is worthwhile: you have to climb up to 3200 m to go down to 2200 m, the road is still passable compared to other roads in Costa Rica. Birds, butterflies are everywhere. The observation of the Quetzal was the icing on the cake. Very gourmet restaurant
