Fabulous stay

I stayed here for 4 nights. I had a hire car and used this as a base to visit other Hill towns in Istria and to do some hikes and riding.
I spent a month in Croatia and this was my favourite area for sure. Scenery is stunning, the people are much more friendly and it has a very relaxed vibez Its small little town but interesting and it is lovely & quiet at the end of a long day.
I couldn’t fault this hotel. From the minute I arrived the staff were nothing but helpful. It is in fabulous condition with lovely pieces of furniture everywhere.. I had a beautiful room with a lovely view, breakfast was fresh and plentiful each morning. I was given a bunch of wild asparagus by a local and the lovely lady in the kitchen. cooked this for me and put it in an omelette for breakfast, it was just divine.
I didn’t use the pool so I can’t comment. I would highly recommend stay here and I would love to come back if I ever have the opportunity thank you to everyone for a wonderful four days.
PS I had dinner at the restaurant every night and the food was amazing. I found both the hotel and the restaurant very good value.

Comfortable Hilltop Hotel with decent food and Spa

Another hilltop hotel we visited as part of an InnTravel walking holiday in Buzet. Our smallish room was comfortable and offered a lovely view over the road across the countryside.
We also had dinner included – four set menus to choose from. We had fish one night, meat the other. Both were nice, and the local wine was as ever well priced, plentiful and eminently drinkable. Buzet is a small place, and we wondered around and had a drink down the road – the town is full of little side streets and plaques giving little details about the place. Really good spot at the top of the hill to rest and recover and well placed for walks. The climb up is steep but not too bad, and a cold glass of Malvazija is just reward.
The pool was a great place to cool down after a long day of walking, and there is a spa, although we did not use the additional facilities.

Magnificent location, memorable atmosphere and exquisite staff. Excellent breakfast and attention to detail

I stayed at the hotel Vela Vrata in the pretty town of Buzet, Istria, for 4 nights between Christmas and New Year and I had a great time. The hotel looks like a structure consisting of a main building that includes reception, restaurant, SPA, indoor pool and breakfast room, and an annex with 4 large rooms suitable for large families, and also equipped with kitchen, kitchenette, microwave and refrigerator. We chose this accommodation, and the rooms are immediately as well-kept, spacious and comfortable, with a large double bed that are actually two beds together (but abroad it is difficult to find really double beds unless you spend significant amounts), and another extra sofa bed decidedly large. Excellent and well-kept parquet flooring throughout the apartment, underfloor heating for the bathroom area and 'air conditioning, too bad that on our arrival did not work, but I will talk about it later.
The property is located in a truly enchanting, romantic and unforgettable location, almost at the top of a fortress dominated by the high Buzet church. The hotel essentially occupies an entire narrow, one-way uphill road, which directly overlooks the valley below and shows a beautiful panorama. This narrow street is all cobbled, spotless and well-kept, it looks like a boulevard of Paris with stone walls, high trees and - in our period of stay - numerous but discreet Christmas lights .. in short, the atmosphere you breathe is really relaxed, serene and unforgettable. The reception overlooks the street and a terrace that houses the bar and restaurant (where they offer courses of local truffles and menus at fixed prices), and as soon as we parked the car the very kind and efficient lady of the reception showed us how to reach the private parking (closed by an electric gate, so maximum security: ask for the electronic remote control, it is free and only needs a deposit of 10 € ..) , brought us in person the keys to the room and helped us with the maneuvers of the car to be able to unload luggage, even running to the archway of entry and exit from the road to stop any cars and facilitate unloading, what can I say - chapeau to this efficient welcome, very kind, smiling and that already makes a good start to the holiday.
The parking is directly below the annex, as you can see from the photo, too bad that to return to the hotel the only access is an extremely steep staircase full of steps of different heights, very dangerous because dark apart from a spotlight in the upper part .. I would suggest the structure maybe to illuminate better because between suitcases and darkness the stumble is around the corner.
Returning to the room, as mentioned is extremely comfortable, the mattresses are of good quality, the square footage is really wide and the bathroom spotless and equipped with all the accessories and amenities for guests such as shampoo, foam bath and body lotion, really everything great including the brand new shower and very wide. There is plenty of furniture and storage where you can put and store items and clothes, including a pantry stocked with dishes and glasses, kitchenette with two burners, microwave sink and large and working fridge, you can not really complain about anything.
Too bad that - as I said - as soon as we arrived we found that the air conditioning did not work at all, the room in fact was very cold. We immediately reported the thing at the reception and I must say that the management of this problem was exemplary for efficiency, kindness, availability, so a big compliment to the staff: in fact, first they sent an attendant to check if you could do something, then they proposed to change rooms (the one above, which had the same problem), not being able to propose the rooms of the main structure because they were smaller. They told us that the next day they would call a technician and in the meantime they made us find an electric fan at full power, and explained that unfortunately they had opened the same day after Christmas and that the air conditioning was not working properly in the annex. The next morning they informed us that the technician could not do anything on December 28 and they put us a bigger and quieter heat fan, apologizing again and asking to see how it was going during the day .. in short, they did everything possible to solve a problem not dependent on them, they came to the room, they activated immediately, and finally with the two fans (and with the upper room occupied and that -maybe- had working air, even if little), and with the handcuff heating in the stairs at the end the temperature in the room was absolutely comfortable, so much so that on the last day we turned off one of the two fans or even both. This is an example of how to cope with an unforeseen situation of difficulty with courtesy, proactivity is kindness: these are things that happen, but the attitude and care for the guest is not always so obvious.
But in general all the staff is really nice, smiling, helpful and makes you feel really at home .. I want to mention in this regard Iva, the girl who runs the local breakfast quickly. efficiency and courtesy. With our family was very kind and patient, and was able to make special even breakfast, which is absolutely excellent: the biscuits are homemade as well as the cake, also excellent croissants, the scrambled egg and excellent sausages. There is also a wide selection of salads with various vegetables, cheeses, cold cuts, cereals, three types of juices and a brewing machine of various types of coffee (surprisingly good).. completes everything different brioche every day, fresh fruit, strudel, in short there is really everything, and everything of excellent quality. The room is very nice, spacious and elegant with spotless tables and also suitable for large families.
In general throughout the hotel there is a grade care for the furnishings, for the objects, everything is taken care of in detail, creating a cozy, warm atmosphere, which makes you feel at ease. In reception there is always someone ready to help with the smile like the guy who usually sits behind the computer who speaks excellent English and is extremely kind and professional.
The hotel is also equipped with a SPA with Jacuzzi and sauna, but it is charged (€ 18 for almost two hours) but you have the SPA completely available, without other guests.
Pool chapter: it is very neat and very clean, albeit small, but cozy with soft lighting and well insulated from the outside. Too bad that there is no dressing room but only two showers and two bathrooms .. so those who - like us - reside in the annex are forced to change at best in the hallway or - worse still - in the bathrooms that are small. I find it honestly incomprehensible how a locker room with lockers or hooks has not been provided, because if you do not reside in the main hotel structure and you do not come directly in a bathrobe, changing becomes a problem and an inconvenience.
In this regard, unfortunately there is no direct connection between the annex and the main structure of the hotel, so every time you have to go to the reception, to the pool or to have breakfast you have to go out into the street with the consequent thermal shock between the very warm and comfortable interiors and the outside that in winter presents decidedly cold temperatures. I wouldn't say, because it's not a surprise, it's called an annexe because it's a structure detached from the main building, and obviously they can't fix it by digging underground tunnels, so personally it can't logically be a criticism, but simply a report: if you want to enjoy all the comforts of Vela Vrata, book a room in the hotel.
Prices are high for Croatia, although things have changed completely since the changeover. Let's say that the expense is at the level of a great Italian hotel, but it does not have all the same services (like the kitchen, like the Spa): a boutique hotel costs much, much, much more than Vela Vrata. It must be said that even the Croatian 5-star rating is not the Italian one, both from a point of view of perfection of furnishings and from the point of view of spending.
Despite some "structural" defects (detached structure, swimming pool without changing room) and some problems such as air conditioning or the non-double bed / mattress, I still decide to give 5 full and convinced pellets to Vela Vrata: the serene and warm atmosphere, the exquisite welcome and kindness of all the staff, the excellent breakfast and the truly unforgettable location made my stay truly memorable, and this is the only thing that matters .. if we are still around, we will return.
Meanwhile still congratulations to all the staff
