Value for Money, a great experience, and BIRDS!

Another stand out place to stay and (more importantly) birdwatch in the Mindo cloud forest. My partner and I were lucky enough to have the entire lodge to ourselves and were given two rooms to use which was a nice surprise. The lodge is rather isolated (part of its appeal), although you can get to the nearest restaurant in about 15 (bumpy) minutes drive if you have your own car, as we did. I recommend El Colorado Paradero for great food. Otherwise the accommodation itself provides great meal at an additional cost in their own restaurant just along the road which is only opened if meals have been requested/booked in advance. The lodge itself was rustic, charming, private and in an amazing location, with bird feeders set up for great viewing and photographing opportunities, and for anyone interested in staging hummingbird photography set ups there were adjustable stands with clips on flexible arms to attach flowers to which we were free to use. The morning birding tour cannot be missed, for the Cock-of-the-rock lek, Potoo, and three different Antpittas, all of which would have been missed without the tour and the expertise of the guides. Stand out birds at the lodge itself was an Oilbird, Crimson rumped Toucanet, a Black and white Owl that visited every night for the moths in the light, and a surprise visit from a male Cock-of-the-Rock in a tree right outside our window! This is alongside plenty of Hummingbirds, Barbets and Tanagers etc. This is very good value for money for a birding experience in the Mindo Valley, definitely recommend.
A word of warning - Don't rely on google maps for directions, you'll end up on a complete wild goose chase along the next mountain range and we got completely lost. It is a little hard to find if you're self driving, look out for the Cock-of-the-Rock signpost on the main road turnoff, and follow the signs along the way.

A must-see birding stop in Ecuador

I booked a 5-day tour, and would highly recommend! If you only book a day tour, you are missing out. I had an excellent guide for the entire 5 days (Thanks Andy Paz!). Angel and Andy showed me four species of antpitta right on the property. They also know the roosting locations of a variety of interesting birds such as lyre-tailed nightjar and common potoo. They can take you to the cock-of-the-rock lek, and show you a variety of stunning highland birds.
Aside from the amazing birding, the meals were absolutely excellent with huge portion sizes. All the staff were extremely kind and accommodating. The rooms at the lodge were very comfortable, and there was a nice sitting area with books where the owners always offered me coffee in-between activities. The lodge was very quiet and peaceful, and there was a nice space to sit and observed hummingbirds and tanagers at the feeders.
I spent a month and a half in Ecuador, and this was definitely a highlight! If you are a birder, it simply cannot be missed.

Fabulous nature experience!

Incredible variety of bird species, butterflies, moths and other flora and fauna. Eagle-eyed guides able to call birds out of hiding. Warm welcome by all staff, delicious local home-cooked food. A stay is highly recommended. Good WiFi at the lodge. Accommodation is rustic.

One of my best birding experiences ever,

Great birding tour, really well worth the time to experience this place. It's amazing to see what they have done to protect the habitat and to foster the cooperation of so many rare rainforest species for the benefit of birders. No boots necessary if you stay on the trails.

Wonderful morning birding visit

We didn-t stay here, but went on the morning birding visit, which was excellent, and we saw many birds including golden headed quetzals, hummingbirds, tanagers, antpittas, and the elusive cock of the rock. They gave us a wonderful breakfast included in the price too. If you go here from Mindo, book directly with them and they will fetch you as taking a guide and driver from Mindo itself will cost you much more.
