FONTAN Luxor practical nice hotel

Was recommended from a German guy when I I was leaving Hurghada or would never of found. Inexpensive safe family run hotel that they are proud of with good reason. You won’t get the Hilton but for your money you’re getting a great deal. Walk to the Nike Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple if fit. Place is clean. Make sure you turn on hot water switch to shower. Had lovely balcony. Bit noisy evening but after 11/12 quite. They have quiet rooms too. I wanted balcony and street life view. Safe hotel Safe Neighborhood Close to all shops.
You can also walk in and ask to see the rooms before booking.

I loved this place!

The rooms was clean, the shower was hot and the people behind the desk helpful. There was good wifi in the reception and also the possibility to order pizza to your room from a local Italian! The young lad behind the desk was a massive credit to the place, made me laugh and feel so welcome!

Nice place

We stayed there for 3 nights, just when redecorating was going on, but did not affect our stay at all. We had spacious and very clean room with big bathroom. Owner pays attention to detail (towels/stand for drying clothes in the room, welcome drinks upon arrival, perfect signal for wifi) and looks after the place. He is very helpful and speaks excellent english, arranged great excursion for us to the monuments. Breakfast was simple but tasty (omelette,bread,jam,cheese and hot drink). Staff would boil water for us when we fancied coffee. Highly recommend for any travellers.

Untrustworthy Owner, Noisy Dirty Rooms,

1. The owner will charge you what ever he thinks he can get away with. No prices are displayed, and he is likely to try and ask where you stayed previously to get an idea of what he can charge you. You would be crazy to accept any of his tours or offers - they are awfully overpriced.
2. My room was absolutely grimy. The pillows were awful. The bed was sunken and incredibly uncomfortable. Struggled to sleep due to the noise and light from the street outside.
3. Breakfast was a few pieces of stale bread with jam.
4. The bathroom certainly doesn't look like the one in the picture. It was however fairly clean, albeit could have done with a shower curtain.

Solid Value - If you avoid the tours.

I'm genuinely shocked to see so many negative reviews. We found the Fontana a solid value with a super family running the place.
Checked in almost at sunrise and the owner didn't fuss when we asked for four nights starting that day, so we got the room 6 hours early. Breakfast was ample for hot Egypt days when you need energy and not a bloated stomach. The Wi-Fi was the best we've had in the middle east (yes, I know Egypt is Africa, but I'm culturally grouping here), if a little inconsistent.
Additionally, the clientele here is great. We met other long term travelers, travel writers, and a dude who'd been to Egypt 60 times in 30 years! So much knowledge hanging out in the dining room.
Now all of that said, avoid the tours like the plague. While I don't hold the owner at fault for making a few extra bucks selling such things, our tour we booked through them almost ruined our trip to Luxor. Another fellow joined us who'd payed 50% less than we did after factoring tickets and the guide was just a straight up jerk. I probably wouldn't have mentioned it, assuming it was a one off problem, but per other reviewers, it seems to be a systemic issue. Just stay away from them.
Also, wife says -.5 for really hard pillows.
Anyhow, if you're on a tight budget or just like a super deal, you'd do well to stay here. Just firmly say no to the 'information' you will be offered at check-in.
P.s. We agreed to a price on arrival and paid cash up front. It was more than fair, included breakfast, and were not hassled at all regarding money.
