Poor accommodation and we weren't treated fairly.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend Vineyard Apartments based on our experience.
We booked the apartment because we needed to stay near the Outrigger for a friend’s wedding and, after other accommodation we had booked in Sigatoka was cancelled, there were limited options available in the area.
From the moment we arrived, it didn’t feel as though the apartment had been properly prepared for our stay. The directions on Booking.com didn’t take us directly to the property, so we had to arrange to meet Samuel elsewhere and follow him there.
When we entered the apartment, there was a very strong smell of damp, and my friend could also smell cigarette smoke. Once we had settled in and had a proper look around, we found the standard of cleaning disappointing and a number of things that were advertised as being provided were either missing or not as expected. There were also several maintenance issues.
To begin with, Samuel was responsive when we raised these problems, and we appreciated him trying to resolve some of them. Unfortunately, things changed the following day when we tried to discuss our concerns with him. The conversation became confrontational and we were repeatedly referred to as “complainers”.
We weren’t expecting luxury. We simply expected the accommodation to be clean, properly prepared for our arrival and to provide what had been advertised.
During the conversation, Samuel told us that he could have cancelled our booking but had instead “let” us come, which only reinforced our impression that the apartment hadn’t been ready for guests. We were also told that a cleaner had been arranged to come later in the week, despite us already being several days into our booking by that point.
The interaction left us feeling uncomfortable enough that we decided to leave the property early and find alternative accommodation. Samuel did eventually accept our decision and provided us with a receipt. He also told us he would relist the apartment and refund us for any of our remaining nights that were subsequently rebooked. We later contacted him via WhatsApp asking whether there had been any update and received only “Hello Bula” in response.
For context, during our trip we stayed in eight different properties across Fiji, from the main island to the smaller islands, at a range of price points. This was the only accommodation where we experienced problems like this. We had an amazing time in Fiji overall and found people incredibly welcoming, which made this experience stand out even more.
For a very short stay, some travellers may find the apartment adequate, but based on the cleanliness, damp smell, missing or poorly maintained facilities and the way our concerns were handled, it wasn’t somewhere we felt comfortable continuing our stay.
