A Masterclass in Failure – Avoid This Disastrous "4-Star" Illusion

This easily ranks as the absolute worst hotel experience of our lives. Novotel Bayeux needs a mandatory masterclass on what the word "hospitality" actually means. The staff possesses a complete lack of empathy, competence, and basic professionalism.
We travelled to this deeply disappointing property directly from Novotel Le Touquet, where our experience was great. Naively, we expected a similar standard. We were dead wrong. This site completely blindsided us, serving as a harsh reality check that hotels sharing the exact same brand and star rating can exist on completely opposite ends of the quality spectrum.
Since I have absolutely nothing positive to say, let me share the uniquely frustrating experiences we endured:
• The "Breakfast" Experience: The food was laughably substandard, featuring the most restrictive, microscopic selection we have ever witnessed in any hotel—including sister Novotel branches. On our first morning, the scrambled eggs were burnt to a crisp, the beans were overcooked and completely dried out, the sausages were overdone, and the egg boiler was broken. When we pointed out the non-functional boiler, the staff acted utterly confused, running around like headless chickens without fixing anything. Clearly, the breakfast staff found their daily gossip infinitely more important than serving paying customers. The failure escalated as the stay progressed: baked beans disappeared from the menu entirely, the food quality never improved, and on our final morning, even the croissants were cold, dense, and completely non-flaky. How a hotel in France fails at croissants is mind-boggling.
• The Ghost-Town Counters: This is one strange hotel where the counters are apparently just decorative. No one is ever present at the reception or the bar (especially toward the evenings). You are expected to stand there and wait endlessly before someone decides to reluctantly appear from the back.
• Pitiable Room Upkeep: Our room was left in a permanently unkempt state. What exactly do you think the "Clean My Room" option is for? Amusement? It is tragic that your housekeeping staff needs basic, elementary lessons on how to clean a room. Furthermore, this supposed 4-star hotel fails to provide basic standard toiletries that are readily available at any other Novotel property.
• The Convenient Language Barrier: The staff loves using the French language as a calculated excuse to evade accountability, pretending they suddenly do not understand a word of English. Even when we literally acted out our needs or used a digital translator, they maintained a look of intentional confusion. Common sense cannot be that rare.
• The Reception Hostility: Our biggest surprise came when we went down to complain about the filthy room (after waiting a standard 20 minutes for someone to show up, of course). The staff member on duty was shockingly rude. Instead of addressing the issue, he immediately got defensive and had the audacity to lecture me about being "short-staffed," implying it was my duty to empathise with his operational shortcomings. When I correctly pointed out that their internal staffing disaster is not my problem, and that I am a paying customer who expects a clean room, his tone turned completely acidic. He rudely dismissed me, snapping that my message would be passed along and that "it is not his job to clean my room." I never told him to grab a mop; I expected a front-desk professional to handle a grievance. Instead, he threw a temper tantrum, took the complaint as a personal insult, and acted like the victim.
REAL-TIME STAY UPDATE & THE FINAL NIGHT:
Following our major confrontation at the front desk, any effort the hotel made to mend things was purely superficial. The bedsheets were never properly unrolled or tightly tucked—they just pulled the top blanket up over messy, untidy sheets underneath. On our final night, they didn't even bother to replace the foot towels, presumably because they knew we were leaving and decided we were no longer worth the effort.
Worse still, not a single member of management or customer service ever contacted me regarding the reception incident. No apology, no follow-up, and zero accountability. They don't just have a front-desk problem; they have a systemic, top-down leadership failure. They are fully aware of a guest's severe dissatisfaction and chose to meet it with complete, arrogant silence.
This hotel has officially passed the point of no return. We will never set foot in this property again, and we will make sure our experience is shared with as many travellers as we can reach. Novotel Bayeux needs a top-to-bottom institutional reform, targeting both the miserable management attitude and the non-existent hospitality.

A basic hotel. With numerous rules.

Professional and courteous - staff and well maintained hotel. Clean and well maintained common areas an rooms.
Numerous rules about everything. Construction in hallways was being done in May.
This hotel is convenient for people visiting Normandy Battlefields but a long walk to any restaurants in Bayeux town. Also follow a rule of low voices after dusk. We were in our room talking on the phone at night to the USA ( 5 hours behind) and contacted by staff and asked to "not talk loud". I've never been on my phone an had someone in the hall hear me. I guess the walls are paper thin in this hotel.
The breakfast area is well stocked but is also full of rules. Do not remove any items from area and attempt to leave - such as coffee. We witnessed multiple people being chased down by staff like a road side speed trap. Fingers waving. This is forbidden. Do not put orange juice in a coffee cup, this is forbidden. No back backs or bags can be allowed into the breakfast area - to prevent stealing of food. ect ect you get the gist. Follow the rules, whisper like library voice, eat in breakfast area - no take aways. It's fine and you are now in the Army. Good luck.
