Outstanding Food

Had lunch here on 11 Jul with a work colleague and his wife. The dining room is unassuming but the service was warm and efficient. The menu is varied but its strength is its emphasis on local produce, pork, foie gras, cheeses from the local dairy etc. We werent expecting much but were blown away by the high quality of the food. I had a black pudding tart which was delicious, followed by a pork "shepherd's pie" which was a meal on its own, incredibly tasty and very rich. The cheeses were all local from a few kms away. A glass of nice red topped off a wonderful, unexpected meal in a hostelry that I will definitely visit again. A real gem.

Sad experience...

Never trust the photos on a site…that’s what I tell myself every time, but this is the pompom! Obviously the hotel industry is not the job of the person who welcomes us at 6:30 p.m. You have to wait outside for someone to come and open the door and turn on the light because it is pitch black and 0 degrees.
The room comes straight from the 70s, the duvet has no cover, in the freezing bathroom, an empty Kleenex case, a single roll of toilet paper already well used, the empty shower gel refill in the tray shower with a curtain…..
the restaurant: very very expensive, you have a glass of wine, and when you order a second one, they come to top off the first one which is not yet finished....
In summary, a very great lack of professionalism, for a very excessive price.
Too bad, we were celebrating a gourmet and cozy stopover, we left frustrated and very early in the morning, to get it over with as quickly as possible.
Not to mention the fact that you are harpooned when leaving the table to pay the bill because the next morning no one is at reception before 9am.
The only positive note is that the cuisine is talented, but spoiled by an environment that is too dated and sinister.

Good food, gloomy location

The food was very nice, traditionally French, interesting flavours, well presented and we all enjoyed eating it, one of the better restaurants in this area. However the waitress was somewhat sombre which could make you feel miserable whilst eating there...A little smile and perhaps some calm background music could make the atmosphere a little more jolly. A good value French meal nonetheless.

Best foie gras in the SW

The service is not a three Michelin star but who cares? The lady ran around the room and did he best, who could ask for more? On top of that Madame came and said hello to everyone.
The foie gras entree on the degustation menu is outstanding.
Maybe the best I have eaten.
The following plates good cuisine de terroir. If ever the chef reads this I would perhaps suggest that he simplifies the confusing flavours of the desserts and follow the line of the previous dishes of local ingredients treated simply and accurately.
But this foie gras is worth doing 100kms for it!

Real Character

Experience is conditioned by expectation. So do expect superb and original regional cooking. Do not expect the 24 hour service of an urban three star hotel. This is as much a restaurant with rooms as it is a hotel - and none the worse for it.
The hotel side is very much traditional French rural. There are two grades of room - simply but individually furnished, clean and comfortable on our two visits, with (chargeable) wi-fi available and a wide screen TV. Décor is personal, local and slightly quirky, with books and games left out in public areas for guests.
As another reviewer found, the desk is not manned 24/7 - this is a husband-and-wife operation, not a major chain. However Madame Latour was always available and very helpful. And whilst its facilities don’t match (for example) a 2013 Mercure, Le Castera gains enormously in terms of charm and genuine individuality. It has the character of rural French hotels of yesteryear, but with modern electronics and without the dodgy plumbing. And that has to be worth a try.
But the ‘killer app’ is the restaurant. The seasonally changing menu bases itself on local ingredients. The recipes are from the region, often peasant dishes in origin, but prepared with a twist and produced to a very high standard indeed. This is a difficult trick to sustain - it would be all too easy to fall back into mediocrity. But in our visits we found the standard was always excellent, with thoughtful variations to local traditional dishes, and cooking distinguished by tremendous intensity of flavour. If you like food that’s absolutely rooted in the place it comes from there is much to explore.
The wine list follows similar principles - almost all local and regional, including some gems which simply don’t travel far but are seriously worth investigating.
In summary, a rural escape of charm and individuality, which justifies an ‘excellent’ rating through its superb food.
Two tips. Le Castera offers half-board with a fixed menu. Great value, but it’s worth making clear on booking that you want the a la carte option to really benefit from the restaurant. And finally, when you check out you’ll see some home made preserves on sale next to reception including (when we were there) three varieties of plum. Don’t hold back!
