Excellent
We had a fantastic week based at Maison Rose with the super hospitality of James and Lorna. We were booked on their Drome Explorer hiking package (Rustic Tours) and everything was perfect. Lorna picked us up from Saillans Station as we took the train from Lyon mid-afternoon (just under two hours) which meant that we could enjoy afternoon tea on the terrace.
Maison Rose itself is a lovely old house in extensive gardens, very comfortably fitted out and a perfect base for exploring this lovely part of France. Our room was very good and spacious with a beautiful view across the garden to the mountains beyond.
We had a lovely breakfast every morning before setting off on great walks in the mountains with an excellent local guide Edith. We were taken by mini-bus to different area of Drome to walk. Each walk was about 10KM or so.
Every evening James and Lorna prepared a lovely four-course meal which included wine and an excellent range of cheeses.
The village of Saillans is lovely with an interesting old part and just ten minutes walk away.
We highly recommend this experience.

Wine and Walking
Great holiday, enjoyed the walking, the scenery, the food, the wine and the company.
Rooms comfortable, lovely views and plenty of hot water.
Simple breakfast, choice of packed lunch, but the 4 course evening meals were excellent and served with a choice of wine.
We needn't have worried about the company, if you like good wine, food and hiking then you've a lot in common.
The walks were outside our comfort zone but we rose to the challenge and came home a lot fitter. Edith our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Virtually "all inclusive" but check timings of transfers.
We send a big thank you to Lorna and James.

Outstanding
I was a solo traveller on a Wine and Walking holiday and I had the most wonderful time. Beautiful accommodation, stunning views, delightful hosts/travelling companions/mountain guides, delicious food (even accommodating my vegetarian/gluten free diet with flair). Just a gorgeous experience from the moment I arrived…bravo, Lorna and James and thank you for a wonderful holiday!

Above and beyond
We arrived here to partake in a four day Rhone wine experience. Much of what is said in previous reviews is spot-on: the accommodations are clean and comfortable, the food is far above average, the wines delightful, the hosts attentive, and the surroundings like something out of a travelogue.
Our experience deviated from the norm however in that on our second day I came down with Covid. Not only was I isolated in our room, we were forced to extend our stay several days, disrupting the plans and normal activities of Lorna and James. Their response was beyond anything which could or should have been expected - preparing and delivering special meals, providing services not contracted for, working to assure our comfort and that we felt welcomed, and doing it all with grace and dignity.
Anyone considering a visit to the Rhone Valley for wine tasting, hiking, biking, or just to partake in the incredible scenery would be remiss not to make La Masion Rose their base of operations. You will be treated as far more than just a guest and I cannot recommend this gem any more highly.

Exceptional B and B in Saillans
We had an absolutely delightful stay in this beautiful B and B in the Drome valley. The village of saillans has several restaurants and bars , a lively market and , when we were there , classical music in the streets.
We took half board for a week with croissants , fruit and yoghurt ( with boiled eggs if wanted ) for breakfast ; very good filled rolls as packed lunch and delicious restaurant quality four course meals with wine for supper.
Tea and biscuits and local sparkling wine with nibbles were provided every day which were very welcome after some spectacular walks .
The setting was delightful with a beautiful garden and sheltered pool with owls, woodpeckers , redstarts and nightingales both heard and seen.
Bedrooms and bathrooms were very comfortable, with a pleasant indoor dining room and salon, as well as an outside terrace .
What makes this place really special is the host and hostess James and Lorna - bilingual in French and English, they go out of their way to make sure each guest enjoys their stay - from advising on walks, identifying wildlife , to negotiating if guests have problems ( which we did with our hired car )
