Actually good - until personal items have been disposed of

I stayed two nights at the Hotel Stephan for business. The hotel is old as described, but very clean and the staff are also very nice and effortful. The church is not as bothersome as described and the breakfast I have found to be completely sufficient.
But unfortunately the following points don't work: when I got back to the room in the evening, the complete shower shelf with my personal items like shampoo & co (accidentally - I assume further) had been disposed of in the garbage. So the things were gone and unfortunately there were no other measures / ideas besides an apology. Somehow one was helpless with dealing with criticism. In addition, garments that I had deliberately hung over the chair were folded together. Great.. then they had creases again. Here I lack understanding of why this was done in the first place. And last but not least, I had put my small suitcase on the floor and for good reason: there were more clothes and especially two laptops here. I found the suitcase upright in the evening... so the laptops were shaken properly during the action. Here, too, I don't know why people come up with such an idea. So until after the first breakfast, the hotel would have received a recommendation from me; but that personal belongings are disposed of simply cannot be done at all. And neither to procure a substitute, nor perhaps to offer a drink or something similar, is almost outrageous.

Charming old-fashioned hotel in the heart of Altona

As part of my business trip to Hamburg in June 2024, I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Stephan twice – once from 02.06. to 08.06. and once again from 25.06. to 28.06. Based on the similar experiences during both stays, I would like to give a comprehensive overall review.
1. Booking Referral and Arrival
The Reservation for both stays was made by my boss, and the correspondence also went through him, so I didn't have to worry about it. Only it was necessary to pay the cost of my stay on site either cash or by card, which worked without any problems. Upon arriving at Hamburg Central Station, I first took the S-Bahn to the Königstraße stop. Unfortunately, I didn’t consider that Altona station would have been an even cheaper option – a small mistake that can easily be avoided.
The Königstraße stop is about an 8-minute walk from Hotel Stephan. This walk is short and pleasant, and you quickly notice that the hotel is located in a quiet residential area that belongs to the Altona district. The surroundings are surprisingly quiet and green, despite the location in a big city of almost 2 million inhabitants. Many parks and extensive green spaces characterize the image of the area.
2. First impression and check-in
Hotel Stephan surprises on entering with its rather old-fashioned but charming ambience. The decor looks stylish, if a little square and nostalgic. Nevertheless, it does not exude decay at all, but has its own charm. At the reception, I was greeted by a young lady in a friendly, if somewhat reserved manner. The check-in went smoothly – I provided my reservation details, signed a form and paid immediately for my stay. A few minutes later I was able to move into my room.
3. The room
The room itself also reflected the old-fashioned style. Those who like it modern and minimalist might be surprised, but I found this “jump into another time” very amusing. The room was clean, tidy and equipped with everything you need, even if the lack of air conditioning was noticeable in summer temperatures. During my stay in June, the room became quite warm during the day, and the nights were not always relaxing due to the heat.
4. Breakfast and service
The breakfast buffet I tried on the morning of 03.06. was lovingly arranged and served in a large, living room-like room. Although there were not many guests, I was assigned a specific table each time to allow for larger groups. I appreciated that consideration. After I took my seat, I was immediately asked if I wanted tea or coffee. Although the coffee was not the best I ever drank, the service was still excellent.
The breakfast room itself radiated a cosy atmosphere that invited you to feel comfortable and start your day relaxed. The staff was always helpful and friendly, even when I returned to the hotel late at night from work.
5. Service and atmosphere
During both stays, the Hotel Stephan was characterized by a consistently high level of service. Every wish was fulfilled quickly and courteously. The reception desk was always staffed and the staff were always ready to help with any questions or problems.
A highlight was the general atmosphere of the hotel. Despite the old-fashioned ambience, you immediately felt comfortable. I particularly liked the fact that the hotel is located in such a quiet and green part of Hamburg. It is hard to believe that you are in the middle of a big city.
Conclusion
Hotel Stephan offers special and unique accommodation in Hamburg. If you are looking for a charming, old-fashioned hotel with excellent service and a quiet location in a green environment, you will find it here. Despite minor drawbacks such as the lack of air conditioning, I can recommend the Hotel Stephan with a clear conscience, especially if you are looking for something special and do not value state-of-the-art equipment. The service, cosy ambience and central location make the hotel a good choice – especially for travellers who appreciate a mix of big city and relaxation.

Never again

1. The lady at the reception spoke very little German
2. A double room was no longer available, which is why we moved into a so-called triple room for the price of 190,— €, which corresponded in size and equipment to a double room, where behind the two seating with the table was a third bed on the wall. So a passage of about 60 cm remained between seating and bed. The small TV was behind the armchairs at the foot of the third bed. It bore little resemblance to the family rooms depicted on the Internet.
3. Bathroom and room were clean, but smelled so intense of cleaning products and fabric softener that we first had to ventilate for several hours to sleep symptom-free.
4. Breakfast is significantly too expensive: Buns counted, very thin, bitter coffee, and on Sunday some cake would have been included.
5. Our written complaint was answered, but no mention was made of the deficiencies complained of.
