Interesting

The hotel part is similar to a traditional hotel (with shared baths, futons and Japanese pillows). Good meals and breakfast (Japanese). The ceremony is quite curious (few explanations). The most interesting (in my opinion) are the walks at night and at sunrise

It's a great place to reset your mood.

I visited in early January. I ate all my meals with other guests in the large hall on the same floor. This time I chose the vegetarian option. There was a good bowl of rice and it was delicious.
The facility is not new, but it was well-maintained and clean. There were no slippers to walk around the facility, so it's a good idea to bring your own. I only had socks, but the carpet was sturdy and it wasn't cold.
The early morning goma prayer is a must-see. I also recommend participating in the Great Prajna Prayer in the main hall afterwards.

One of my favorite memories of Japan

Gyokuzo-in was a peaceful oasis in the midst of a busy Japan trip. In contrast to the over-touristed temples in Kyoto, my weekend temple stay felt authentic and was a rich experience: from the fire ceremony at 5:30 am to a tea ceremony with a 500+ year spoon. Best of all were the hardworking people there, from the chief priest to the woman serving dinner---so many kindnesses that would make this review very long.
I was a bit concerned about the shared bathroom facilities. But I always went to the women's bath before dinner (as recommended to avoid having a full stomach while taking a hot bath.) I had the whole place to myself! The common sinks and restrooms were immaculate. The room where I slept had a safe, so there were no worries with valuables.
And walking the grounds was very atmospheric, whether in early morning and hearing drums/chanting or at night seeing the quiet temples up close and the city lights in the distance.

Incredible Experience

Stay here for the location! The hotel itself is nestled amongst a buddhist complex of cobble-stone, lamp-lined paveways weaving through mountainous views and temples. The hotel is a simple ryokan, very quiet and secluded. We were provided a full multi-set meal each night, cooked by a personal chef - absolutely delicious. Quiet onsen below.
A must-do if in the area and looking for an experience like no other.

A magical stay

First of all, you stay here because of it's location. Nothing else. The building smells of old cigarettes, the rooms are simple, there is toilet in the hallway and a public bath in the basement. But, this is an temple in. The building is at the temple area and the people who works there are all monks (with the exception of a few women). The price is reasonable, it came with half board and the food was absolutely delicious. But the best part of it all is the temple area. We went around for an walk around dusk and it was magical. So beautiful, and no people around. I've seen quite a lot of temples but this is by far one of the most beautiful ones. At check in we were also invited to attend their two morning ceremonies. The Fire Ceremony at 5.30 am and the Main ceremony at 6.45. I got up at 5 and attended the fire ceremony and it was a very special experience. This a really magical Japan experience for all of us.
