Just a set of futon and a small table. No TV, hardly any amenities, but an excellent onsen and quiet evening. A perfect place for those who want digital detox.

Perfect Central Location, But Be Ready for Slopes

Hataya is located right in the center of the busiest alley in Arima Onsen. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?
However, depending on how you arrive, carrying a suitcase can be a bit challenging. If you come by Hankyu Bus (likely from the Umeda area), the bus stop is very close, which is convenient. I arrived by JR bus, and the bus stop is near Family Park. I had to carry a heavy suitcase from there to Hataya, and since the streets are quite slopey, it definitely made me sweat.
If you arrive by train, this location is actually one of the farthest from the station. That said, Hataya is in the heart of Arima, so it is great for walking around and sightseeing. Carrying a suitcase is a bit tough, but not a huge challenge.
Hataya consists of three buildings located close to each other. You need to go to Kamioubou first for check-in and check-out, as it is the main building. I booked a room without meals as a solo traveler, and my room was in a building called Koyado. I really enjoyed the concept and atmosphere.
If you book a plan with meals, you will most likely stay in the main building (Kamioubou), where the onsen is located.
Please note that there is no elevator in any of the buildings, but they are only two storeys high.
Each room has a shower, and the hot spring bath is located in Kamioubou. Unfortunately, it is only available after 17:00. If you want to enjoy an onsen in the morning, you will need to visit Kin no Yu or Gin no Yu instead. If you plan to visit those public baths, you can get a discount ticket at Kamioubou.
One more note: many shops in Arima seem to be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and I happened to visit on those days. There is a Seven Eleven in the center of the Arima Onsen area, and a Lawson near Arima Onsen train station.

Amazing location, price and staff. I know a little bit of Japanese so that helped, but they have a book for non-Japanese speakers! If you’re visiting, just please be respectful of their rules. I would definitely come back and recommend to everyone!

Was a nice area to visit.
Wish I had studied more of area. Would have stayed 2 nights instead of 1 had I known better.
Very interesting area and hot springs hard to find as I speak nor read Japanese.
But did enjoy the experience.
