Lovely Ryokan Stay

This is a family run hotel and the staff are extremely lovely. There is a newer part of this hotel that we unfortunately did not stay in. Our room was in the main building where you would find the reception area, the lobby, a small gift shop, the onsen and where the restaurant rooms are located. Our room was located on the third floor, which was one level up from the reception. To reach this floor you do need to climb up a steep flight of stairs - the staff are willing to help you with your luggage.
Our room was only small but sufficient. We had the tatami mats on the floor with a small low table with the low backed chairs. There was a small fridge stocked with water, a small TV with only Japanese stations, the toilet was separate to the bathroom. There was a very small bath and a wet area for the shower.. The towels provided were extremely small for Westerners.
The dinner and breakfast that was provided was excellent - presentation was beyond belief, quality of food was so fresh and quantity was a bit overboard. The staff were so lovely.
Upon returning from dinner, our futons had been set up with a little treat for us, such a lovely touch.
I would definitely recommend anyone wanting to experience sleeping on the floor Japanese style to stay here.
The onsen is only small.
The views were spectacular overlooking the snow on the mountains = just beautiful.
Thank you for providing great service and singing a song prior to our meals.

Very good food

We stayed here with a tour group. Room was tatami with good air conditioning. Room was clean though hallways were not. Carpeting was clearly stained. The place was fine for a night but I would not give it raves like previous reviewer. Dining room and dinner were very good. Onson was clean but small. Had hot and cold tubs which I enjoyed.Nothing very fancy or outstanding here. Minimal English spoken which was not unexpected but staff very helpful.

Excellent stay at this wonderful Ryokan in the sweet little village of Takachiho

Our one night stay on 17/5/2018 was superb. The staff speaks good English and they were also able to help us optimize the bus and train connections for the rest of our 2 days journey in Kyushu. The room we had is immaculate and the smell of fresh linen with the tatami mats is so nice. Our dinner and breakfast turned out to be elaborate affairs with our host taking the trouble to explain the delicate dishes. We were pleasantly surprised when our host offered to drive us to the nearby Takachiho Gorge when we asked to order a taxi. Will definitely return !!

Fantastic! We'd love to be back!

This hotel stood out in every area during our entire trip in Kyushu. The service was out of this world from the very minute our car entered the parking lot. The lady boss of the hotel is Filipino, so it was nice to be able to communicate in English without worrying about miscommunication.
As Mount Aso was closed off, the hotel staff went the extra mile to suggest alternative places for us to explore/sight-see. We had initially only reserved 2 rooms (double and quad-share) but the hotel gave us a third room at no extra cost to us.
When we were curious about how the other wing of the hotel looked like, they brought us to tour the other rooms and a cozy little bar full of antiques.
All the little extra things the hotel staff did made our stay here extra special and memorable! I'm so glad we stayed here! I highly recommend this hotel. (Takachiho Gorge is beautiful!)

A pleasant surprise find in Takachiho

I got to know of this ryokan style hotel from the few reviews available on the internet which raved about the food but this place exceeded my expectations in many aspects.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and gave very useful suggestions on nearby places to visit as we arrived far in advance of the check in time. They also went the extra mile to find contact numbers of the places so that we could key in the numbers into the GPS car navigation system, so that it was a breeze to get to those locations.
The service was impeccable. There was always someone at the car park when we arrived and departed, I don't know how but I suppose the staff must have rushed down upon hearing the sound of a car engine arrive. We received a warm welcome and all the staff, even the lady staff, were very enthusiastic to help us with our luggage.
The rooms were spacious and comfortable. In addition to the air-conditioning system, there was also a portable electric heater for the bathroom and living room. The bathroom had a large bathtub and shower area designed like a private onsen. The futons were very comfortable and thick enough such that you would not feel the difference from a bed with a mattress.
The food lived up to its reputation of being fresh and delicious. There was a wide variety and little more that one can ask for.
The location is not easy to find, but Takachiho is a small town and the same probably goes for many of the other hotels.
We had an enjoyable stay and I would choose this place again if I visit Takachiho again.
