An Unforgettable Ryokan Experience

We stayed at Shohakutei Azumaso for two nights and it was, without question, the most beautiful accommodation we’ve experienced anywhere in Japan.
We booked one of the luxury guest rooms with a private open-air bath, and it was absolutely incredible. Being able to soak in our own onsen while enjoying the peaceful surroundings was such a special experience — the perfect blend of luxury and traditional Japanese design.
Everything about the stay felt thoughtful and refined, yet still warm and welcoming. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, making us feel completely at ease from the moment we arrived.
A definite highlight was meeting the famous hotel cat, Mai-chan, who completely stole our hearts. There’s even a small gift shop featuring Mai-chan merchandise along with a range of beautiful locally handcrafted items, which added a lovely personal touch.
We also made use of the communal open-air baths, which were equally relaxing, and enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast one morning — a truly authentic and memorable experience.
Two nights honestly didn’t feel like enough. This is the kind of place you want to linger in a little longer, soaking up every moment.

The stay at Azuma-so was AMAZING! We enjoyed absolutely everything. The staff was lovely, the baths were very peaceful, the breakfast delicious and all the spaces in the hotel allowed for intense relaxation. Highly recommend getting a massage and taking the tour to visit Ginzan Onsen. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Great ryokan with lovely onsen. Water was very hot but relaxing. Half board banquet style meals were a lot of fun along with wearying the traditional Japanese clothing. Lots of selection and different kinds which was nice. Room was huge and the outdoor tub was lovely. Recommended for sure.
