Breathtaking room, exceptional hospitality, and life changing food.

My partner and I spent two nights at Kuhe this December and had an absolutely phenomenal experience. The hosts were extremely considerate and patient with us as we are both very much beginners when it comes to speaking Japanese. We arrived early for check in and were graciously offered a place to store our luggage as well as a map of the surrounding area of Yutagawa to explore while we waited for our room to be ready. Completely on me, but I had forgotten to book meals along with our reservation, though this turned out to be a non-issue as the hosts were able to fit us into a schedule that allowed us to partake in two dinners and a breakfast during our short stay (granted, this may have been during the off-season so don't count on this always being a thing). The meals though. I struggle to find the language to convey the majesty of this dining experience. Every aspect of the meal was fantastic. The presentation, plating, and dishware. The keiseki format showcasing the different regional offerings and specialties. The flavor profiles, a kaleidoscopic experience in their own rite. The fact that, upon learning of my partner's allergies, they completely went out of their way to accommodate them and change certain aspects of the dinner to compensate for them.
The bathhouse portion is nothing to sleep on either. Both my partner and I have a good amount of tattoos and while this kept us from using the communal bathing options that operate most hours of the day, there was a private bath that we were able to keep an eye on for vacancy. Between us, we had 7 sessions in the private bath (ranging from 10-25 minutes out of consideration for the other guests).
I will add again, the consideration, patience, and kindness demonstrated by the front desk staff was genuinely moving and I wish I had the language skills to thank them properly in person as I left. Here's hoping that they one day see this review and that the translation conveys that message.

Day trips are possible by word of mouth

Word of mouth suggested that it was possible to go on a day trip, but it was not possible and we went to the public bath next door.
I bought the ticket from an old man in a shop,
The temperature of the water was exquisite, and it was nice to remember the warmed-up story.
This time around,
All the hot springs I wanted to visit, the beginning of a baptism that I couldn't go on a day trip

Amazing food and great sleeping

This is our 2nd Onsen experience and 1st in Yamagata. The food was just amazing and it was bountiful. The rooms are nice but be aware there are not showers in the room you need to use the showers in the baths. There are 3 types, men, women and couples. We had a very relaxing stay and highly recommend.

コスパ良すぎる、リピートしたい旅館

別館たまやに泊まりました。お部屋と料理のクオリティ、温泉は貸切風呂、泉質の良さ、スタッフの対応も素晴らしい、すべてを勘案してもコスパが良すぎます。リピーターさんも多いそうで、確かに納得です。湯田川温泉自体の雰囲気も良いです。スタッフのえつこさんはとても温かい人でした。楽しい時間を過ごしました。
I stayed at Annex Tamaya. You can enjoy 5 hot springs, the original Kuhei has 2 and Annex Tamaya has 3. The room was Japanese traditional style, but furniture was modern style. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. I enjoyed the stay.

Best seasonal food & service in northen Japan

Onsen ryokan in Yamagata prefecture, northen part of Japan giving you a wonderful experience you can ever wish for, delicious food, great service, private hot spring, traditional tatami room with a cozy garden.
They serve various kinds of course meals with seasonal ingredients. This time we tried the crabs. As you can see in the photos, we enjoyed those amazing dishes prepared by the great chef. They also have a wide range of sake coming from Yamagata prefecture, which matched very well with the food.
This was my 6th time to visit this ryokan, and they always go beyond our expectation.
With the delicious dinner and breakfast, it makes me feel that the very nice room, onsen, and the heartful professional service come free of charge becuae of the amazingly low price for the stay.
This place is not the most accessible one, and in the winter, they have sever blizzard. However, it is definitely worth the effort.
