Very good lodging option in Oaxaca

Very good hotel, excellent service from its managers, always attentive to the needs of the group, every year I return to this hotel, close to the historic center. The beds were quite comfortable, as well as the rooms being very clean and the furniture in very good condition.

Excellent and Inexpensive Option in Oaxaca

Hotel Colón is convenient to most everything in beautiful Oaxaca City--it's just a few blocks from the Mercados de la Merced, 20 de noviembre, and Benito Juárez and another few blocks from the Zocalo and the city's many, many shops and restaurants. Taxis to Zaachila and other outlying markets and towns are even closer.
A huge single or double room with double bed and en suite bathroom currently costs 500 pesos per night for one person or 800 for two; an even bigger two-double-bed room runs 800 pesos. The rooms aren't luxurious, but they are definitely adequate for travelers who prefer to spend money on things more important than a room that's used primarily for sleeping and bathing. Closet, dresser, and nightstand space are excellent. The hotel doesn't have air conditioning, but all rooms have a fan and a big window. All plumbing works well and there is plenty of hot water at all hours.
Calle Colón is quiet and most of the rooms are upstairs and away from the street. I slept for five nights, completely undisturbed by either street or guest noise.
The hotel has no restaurant, but the hotel two doors away serves good, inexpensive Oaxaca-style meals. For breakfast, try the enfrijoladas con cecina, they were wonderful. Coffee and fresh seasonal fruit are included in the breakfast packages. Mine cost 52 pesos and was more than enough fuel to last till the main meal of the day around 3:00PM.
The staff is extremely accommodating. One afternoon I needed to stay in my room to work and the young room cleaner went to the corner and brought me a sandwich. The reception desk is super-helpful and taxis to take you anywhere in town pass Hotel Colón's front door for ease in getting around Oaxaca.
Downside: the hotel is only minimally accessible for people in wheelchairs or with other mobility issues. There is at least one room on the ground floor, though. It's helpful to have a little Spanish but not mandatory.
The best recommendation? I live in Mexico City and often travel to Oaxaca. I will definitely stay here again. Give it a try.

I have never in my life had such a bad experienced

I stayed here in December 2013 and I have never in my life had such a bad experienced. We loved Oaxaca but don't stay here! The only good ting about this place is the location,4 blogs from the Zocalo.
Despite arriving late on the arrival day, the suite was not ready and it took over the next 3 days to get things in place: only because I complained things were sorted or attempted to be sorted. Firstly, the kitchen that I had been promised was incomplete, the gas was not connected and the all plates etc were missing. Basically the suite had just been built and was not ready to be rented out yet and the whole place was still a construction site. Very unattractive overall! The staircase leading to the suite was very dangerous as the hand rails had not been put yet so I was extremely worried for my two children that they would fall down. I can go on as every day presented a new "experience": three times the doors locked from the inside which meant we could not get into the rooms/toilet - once the locksmith was called and the last time the lock was simply removed from the toilet door leaving a whole in the door! chocking. Apart of all this, a range of things had not been finished in the rooms like missing light pulps, plugs, light shades, missing curtains, missing light in the bath room, no shower curtain, no decoration in the rooms and wires were hanging from the walls.
To top it all, the beds, despite being new, very incredible hard and we had to ask for 3 blankets to try to make our sleep a bit more comfortable. Oaxaca is a fantastic place but don't stay here.

Not a bed and breakfast

The place is pretty and clean but it seems like there is construction going on throughout the property so you will find materials all over. When we arrived our room wasn't ready and for the next couple of days I had to continuously ask for different items that were missing from the room. From trash cans to bath towels to hot water. If you are a patient person and is willing to work with the hotel then you are fine because the people who work here are so so so nice and always willing to assist you and work with you.

A great place to stay when in El Centro district of Oaxaca!

My girlfriend and I drove into Oaxaca just after dark in a deluge of rain with no hotel reservations, checked a couple of hotels that were full, and then pulled up to the Hotel Colon (just saw it and stopped), and they had rooms available...and by this time about any room at any price would have been suitable (read: long, stressful drive!).
(*NOTE: The name of the hotel at present is Hotel Colon. In the previous review, they list it as a B & B, definitely not the case.) Anyway, I parked the car (inside & gratis), got our room key (650 pesos = approx $60 US), walked through the big open marble courtyard with fountain, up the marble stairs and into our room. Everything was very nice, big bathroom and shower, new hardwood floors, newer furniture (could have used a bigger bed), and everything was sparkling clean. The place was a delight!
A further note, the hotel was definitely not a full service type establishment (i.e. no restaurant, bar, shops, etc.). However, they do have Wi-Fi, and as we sat in the courtyard the next morning checking out info on the web, the woman in charge asked and brought us out a carafe of coffee (also gratis). We stayed 2 nights, and if we were staying longer it would have been there. The location was 4 blocks from the Zocalo, and within 6 blocks of 2 of the major markets (mercados), and 2 blocks from an ATM.
Another, interesting place was the little "dive bar" across the street, "Los Cocos Bar". Definitely a locals place, 6 bars stools and maybe 6 tables! What fun! We met taxi drivers and other regulars, and the proprietors. Don Pepe and Gloria were the nicest folks. We spent a bit of time there both evenings.
