An oasis in the city

My husband and I spent a week at the Hotel de las Mariposas in March 2026. It is one of the best hotel experiences we've ever had. The hotel is calm and quiet, with gardens and courtyards and plenty of outdoor space. There is breakfast every morning of coffee, pan (pastry), and cereal, served in a common area where you can say buenos dias (good morning) to other guests. The staff are warm and helpful. There are board games and a bookshelf to borrow from and add to. The whole place encourages rest and relaxation, quiet and time to think, after a busy day in the city. We appreciated that so much. Beautiful setting. Clean, spacious and nicely decorated rooms. No TV's in our rooms (we stayed in two over the course of the week), no pool or restaurant. No interference. The wifi is good, and you can borrow hats, umbrellas, or totes on your way out for daily adventures. It is in a terrific neighborhood, steps from a big and well used park (Parque Llano), and with plenty of restaurants, pananderias (bakeries) and coffee shops nearby. Easy walking distance to the Zocalo, Plaza de Santo Domingo, and other sites. We look forward to going back. Highly recommend!

Las Mariposas got excellent reviews from this site, so my expectations may have been overly high. We felt it was only OK. It's not too far away from the temple and museum of culture of Oaxaca and botanical gardens, but it's not right in the central pedestrian part of Oaxaca City or near Zocalo. Staff is well-meaning but pretty much Spanish only, and no-frills. The room we got was modest with a fan but no air conditioning, and had a tiny bathroom built-in which was kinda basic, not up to the standards of U.S. hotels, or any great amenities. On the other hand, it is Mexico and the price is quite reasonable.

Eco Hotel Las Mariposas was the best stay in Oaxaca! Walking distance so to many places to explore the city. The staff is superb and I appreciated the security of entering the building. It’s a beautiful hotel and I will be returning.

Lovely historical building, lots of charm. we stayed in a room in the back. It was quiet and peaceful. The rooms may be on the small side, but comfortable and satisfactory. The location is near a major park and close to an emerging artistic neighborhood. coffee/tea and pan dulce each morning for all. Garden like setting and butterfly and eco awareness theme.
