Large room, but brown water, poor management and very poor service
The building has potential and an interesting structure, with plenty of wood and an old aesthetic, well marked, reminiscent of hotels of the 80s. That classic atmosphere could play into favour if the place was better maintained and better managed.
Room 603 where we were initially housed was large, was on the top floor and had a very nice view of the city. The beds were very well made, neat and firm, and the size of the room was comfortable. The serious problem appeared when I opened the hot water for shaving: the cold water came out crystal clear, but the hot one started to come out yellow and then brown, darkening the longer I ran. I let the water run for quite some time and filmed it because it was clearly not normal.
When I called reception, they first tried to say it was for street work, which didn't make sense because the cold water was perfect. Then they told me to let the water run and “if necessary take a dip in the pool”, a comment totally out of place. During that same conversation the receptionist admitted that my room was the only one with that problem. If they knew that, they should never have allocated that room or offered to change it immediately.
After insisting enough, I was finally moved to room 203, which was smaller than the one I had paid for. There the hot and cold water came out perfectly clear, which confirmed that the problem was in the original room. That’s why, in value for money, the experience was bad: I ended up dealing with brown water, arguments and a switch to a lower room, so the real value of the stay was far below what you expect to pay.
The cleanliness inside the room, at least in beds and general presentation, was correct. But when you look beyond the room, clear problems appear. Access from the uncovered parking lot to the back entrance of the hotel was in poor condition, with old carpets filled with animal hair, slippery parts and visible dirt on the way to reception. In addition, there was a general lack of maintenance in several areas, which ends up affecting the perception of cleanliness of the place as a whole.
The treatment of the staff was the biggest problem during the stay. Instead of acknowledging the mistake or apologizing, there was a defensive and unprofessional attitude. They even questioned whether he was filming the situation, when he was merely documenting an obvious problem. There was also another conflict when my friend lost the magnetic card in the room: they tried to charge us $10 and we had to argue with three different people until they finally dropped the charge. It was another example of how small situations were handled unnecessarily conflictedly.
As for amenities, the pool is one of the few that really adds to the hotel. The room was spacious and with good views, but beyond that amenities fail to compensate for management, maintenance and service problems. Parking is quite limited and it seems that some of the space is permanently occupied, which reduces the availability for guests. In practice, there are facilities that could add up, but the overall management of the hotel detracts from their value.
The overnight rest was acceptable and we had no serious noise problems inside the room, so in sleep quality it was not a disaster. But the whole experience ended up being marked by poor care and a total lack of accountability from staff and management. Even then I sent a formal email explaining everything that happened and never received a reply or apology.
To get a reference of what the service should be like, we walked just three blocks to Hotel Cecilia and dined at its restaurant “La Preferida”. The difference was enormous: cordiality, professionalism and pride in the work. Our waiter, Gustavo Jacquet, even said that if we didn't like the food he would pay for it himself. That speaks to the confidence you have in your workplace. The food was excellent and the experience was everything you expect when traveling.
Hospitality is demonstrated when problems arise. In this case, unfortunately, the response of the hotel was quite the opposite.
