Beautiful place in Caraz

We stayed with Erick on his beautiful place for a week. The hole crew and he are kind and helpful. The place is not big and big rigs can't enter the small gate. Always check before if he has space! We did the tours with him to the Laguna Paron and to the Canon del Pato. He has so many information about the region and the people how live in this valley. He has a beautiful place to watch the mountains, you even see the highest mountain of Peru, the Huascaran, from here. There is a bathroom with hot shower, a sink to do the dishes. The restaurant serves somr meals and he also can do tasty pizzas on a woodfired oven. We highly recommend him for a beautiful stay at Cordillera Blanca.

Great stay!

Great base camp for planning a tour in the cordilliera bianca and/or have a rest. We left our 2 bicycles and gear in a locked room while trekking a few days and felt very secured about it. We spent 4 peaceful nights under our tent (15sol per person per night) with access to all facilities (hot shower, electricity,…) and enjoy beautiful view from the rooftop. Eric is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!

Erick's awesome Apu Ecolodge

Hi all, we want to make sure, if you plan to cross Caraz on your way in Peru, that you need to stop urgently for a visit in Erick's Apu Ecolodge. It's not only a perfect location, a wonderful yard (with tousands of tasty berries and fruits and vegetables you can't even imagine) or a good place to meet and greet new people, its just family. Erick is an openhearted, interested and welcoming mind with a lot of generous ideas and always offer his help. Specially in our case, when we got stuck in Caraz, during the first Covid-19 lockdown he talked to the embassy for us and helped to organise our transfer to Lima where we had to catch one of the returning flights. On top of this we could leave our beloved camper on his site and he's always making sure that it's save at his site. There's nothing you can't ask for in Apu Ecolodge. Please don't miss the chance of get to know the amazing Apu. Watching the pictures or videos of our time there makes us still feel at home.

Highly overrated

We stayed at Apu Ecolodge from Dec. 27th through Dec. 29th and were quite disappointed with our overall experience. We had booked after reviewing trip advisor rating and were quite surprised to see the stark difference between ratings and reality. Our original booking was for 3 nights but we decided to check out one day early and moved to Huaraz due to the uncomfortable experience.
First of all the lodge feels like a one man operation and it is certainly too much for him to handle. He is a good person with his heart in the right place and will try to help and accommodate however he is quite ill equipped to make your stay comfortable. We switched rooms 3 times in the 2 day stay due to lack of cleanliness - bugs and spiders under the blankets. No one came to clean the rooms. It rained quite a bit during the two day stay so they had some water trouble - there was no water in the bathroom for almost an entire day. They had to draw water from local reservoir in the meantime and the water color was muddy brown. We couldn’t gather the courage to shower so we literally didn’t shower for 2 days. If you do full boarding they charge you $10 per person per meal however the food was below average and very overpriced. There were no options for lunch or dinner and you get a plate full of tasteless food.
There is no one at the reception - hardly anyone speaks English so communication is a big challenge if the owner is not around. The place also runs on volunteers and most of the time we couldn’t tell who is guest and who is employee.
Completely understand it is a remote location and we didn’t expect five star service. However the lack of cleanliness and basic necessity like water - even drinking water was quite disappointing.
The lodge does have potential however it requires a lot of work and attention to detail. More than anything it requires a manager who can help streamline the activities so that guests are comfortable.
The owner was cool enough we decided to check out early and didn’t charge and penalty however we felt we paid quite a bit for the tours and services for the quality of delivery.
If we were to do it all over again we would not choose this lodge at all.

Loved it

Perfect place to relax and enjoy the amazing region of Áncash. I stayed two nights and didn't want to leave! It's very quite, clean, the food is delicious and the hosts make you feel home. I will come back for sure as soon as I get the opportunity. 100% recommended to people looking for a relaxing time, far from parties and chaos.
