Such a unique and fascinating hotel to stay in. From the start you're already curious about what you would encounter during your stay and as soon as you walk in, the "jail" vibe just hits, but with it an air of pure luxury is felt throughout and every detail has been considered. The walls in your room are a mix of modern plaster but where they can, they've left the original exposed brickwork that the prisoners would have seen and felt when they were in there 200+ years ago. I believe most rooms are 3 original cells knocked through, creating a luxurious bedroom space with dressing table and then provides a beautiful en-suite which looks stunning. Underfloor heating makes the room feel welcoming and there is air conditioning in each room which again makes it feel homely rather than the cold cell it once was.
The rooms all have a plaque which gives details of a prisoner who was homed in your room (cell). I did expect a little more exciting than a woman who spent 2 months in there for stealing milk, but they have to keep it low-key I suppose.
The breakfast was delicious and for a Sunday, it was very busy but they handled it efficiently. I would recommend the restaurant although it is quite pricey. Sadly, no encounters during the night of anything other-worldly, but we absolutely loved our stay there and it has been a huge talking point with friends since we stayed. Would return for sure!

Better then expected. The hotel was a luxury stay, refurbished perfectly keeping some of the original features of the jail.
I liked the terminology used by staff, such as asking for inmate details when checking in and saying we were free to leave on check out. Bath was a treat and complimentary mini bar was very generous.
If you like character hotels, then this is one of the best.

Amazing setting and beautifully kitted out rooms.
Breakfast was lovely (though buffet elements could have been topped up as we went in the last half hour so some things were running low, including plates!).
Loved the bar - fab cocktails - and the restaurant, though was very pricey.

What an amazing hotel!! We spent 2 nights here with our young children… they absolutely loved it…
Room was surprisingly spacious, bed really comfortable.. but the best part was the bathroom….. free standing bath and a large shower……
The design of these rooms is excellent.
Everything was immaculate.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming when you enter the hotel
Breakfast was lovely… with good quality produce, again.. staff very accommodating.
We also visited the Bodmin Jail museum… also excellent, and you get a discount if staying at the hotel….
All in all a very pleasant experience, highly recommended and we will definitely be returning.

As it was once a jail, the walls are thick and built under interesting (challenging) circumstances, which you can learn about. It feels like you are inside a sturdy fortress. The rooms are very well appointed and the bathroom is a highlight, with a waterfall shower and a fabulous bathtub placed on the tiles at the other end of a full length wall mirror. Lux.
Staff were friendly and reserved, very easy to deal with. The restaurant/breakfast room is an old chapel. It’s impressive. Had a lovely quiet stay here, thick walls and the small windows of the cell.
