Fantastic afternoon tea for dietary requirements

I don't ever write reviews but had such a fantastic experience at Moonfleet Manor today that I need to share! Particularly as I looked at other reviews prior to going which made me slightly apprehensive...
I had booked a table of 9 for a babyshower and from start to finish, the staff were excellent. Friendly and helpful on the phone when discussing the reservation, especially Wendy (thank you!) and very quick to respond on email.
Beautiful setting (we sat outside) the food was stunning and well worth the £35 for afternoon tea- the staff incredibly attentive and prompting drinks orders etc.
I was particularly impressed as I'm coeliac as well as milk intolerant and I've NEVER been somewhere that can cater for both for an afternoon tea and wow, it was exceptional food (I was expecting lettuce and water....!) Very, very impressed.
Highly recommend. Thank you Moonfleet.

Average

Expected this to have 2 specific strengths- family centred and luxury. On the first point nearly all travellers are families with small children so there are some nice touches to cater for children such as appropriate seats, cutlery etc in the restaurant, some available childcare included , other group activities and a large play barn. Also everyone staying has a child who may kick off so no one really cares about that which is nice! barn has play features for all ages and is great for wet weather, potentially the best part. Slight challenge is that children might be atttacted to equipment a bit too old for them - it might be hard to get a child away from free to use arcade games if you’re normally particular about screen time.
Swimming pool good but changing area a bit small.
The staff were ok - in the restaurant they were friendly and trying their best but on one day they were really understaffed and could not cope and service fell apart.
On the general point of luxury setting, this does not really compare to another of their hotels which I’ve visited . Same price point but just didn’t have the same convenience and comfort either for the room or the communal areas. I found the toilets in the common areas to be not great; appreciate there are a lot of small children using these but felt quite old, small and not well maintained. Also space to sit etc in a sort of lounge areas but staff just seemed too rushed to even try to order a coffee or a drink when not in the restaurant. Not ideal when you are a fair distance from the nearest large town. All these comments are in comparison to another hotel in the same company so dealing with the same sector of customers ie families with children, so I don’t think I’m being unrealistic.

Anniversary meal

Had a fantastic meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Firstly had delicious cocktails and nibbles in the lounge, served by the very friendly Jay. The sausage roll was incredible! Then warmly welcomed by Christian to the dining room. Leon was very attentive and we wanted for nothing. Absolutely incredible food it was all delicious and washed down with lovely wine. The atmosphere of the dining room was very relaxed with unspoilt views of chesil bank. The evening was then finished off with more cocktails in another of the lounges by the very friendly Oli. Can’t wait to return in December for our birthdays and to see the fires roaring in the lounges. Thank you Moonfleet x

Stunning views in very family friendly hotel

Beautiful country house hotel with stunning views and grounds. We were part of a large family group and were very well looked after. The family room was spacious, although cosy room was tiny but clean and comfortable. The meals were well-served and we enjoyed having our own dining room for a family celebration, served very well by Wendy. One criticism was meals should be signed off after each meal to avoid confusion, especially when some members of the party were changing rooms and there was a mix of rooms and names.
The swimming pool was adequate and clean but the play barn was marvellous, catering for different ages.

Convenient if you have young children but not luxury

We enjoyed our stay but felt that it was massively overpriced for what it was. We have stayed at other hotels, like the pig, which are actually cheaper but where the service and rooms are much better. I would not pay this price for the stay again.
The staff were well meaning but inexperienced and we often had to get up from our table to find someone to order. The housekeeping was very mediocre, if not poor to be honest. Our bed was left half made every day they came in and they didn’t do simple things like clear away our two years old’s beaker of milk from the previous day.
We had the deluxe sea view family room but I did not feel that it was deluxe and the photographs of the room online misrepresented it - the online photos were of a four poster bed with a table and chairs by a large window overlooking the sea. Instead we had small windows which did admittedly have a view but was nothing like the photos.
That being said, the hotel is set up well for families and there were loads of activities. It feels very relaxed and no one bats an eyelid at toddlers running around. There was an adults only hour in the pool which I didn’t understand as the pool was very basic and certainly not one where you could do lengths. If you are looking for convenience and to be spend some time together as a family then it ticks the boxes and it’s a great location to go and explore the Jurassic coast.

Dear Jet13080697757,
Thank you for taking the time to share further feedback following your stay. I am pleased that you enjoyed Moonfleet’s relaxed family atmosphere, the range of activities and our rather special position on the Jurassic Coast.
I am sorry, however, to read your comments regarding housekeeping and service. A bed being left half made and yesterday’s milk beaker remaining in the room are basic details and not the standard we expect. Equally, guests should not routinely need to leave their table to find somebody to take an order. Our team includes colleagues at different stages of their hospitality careers, but that should never prevent attentive, warm service, and both points will be addressed with the relevant teams.
I would, however, like to clarify the point regarding your Deluxe Sea View Family Room. Moonfleet is a historic building and, as a consequence, our bedrooms are individual in their proportions, layout, windows and architectural features, even within the same room category. The photographs online are therefore illustrative of the category rather than photographs of the specific bedroom a guest will receive. Your room was a Deluxe Sea View Family Room with the associated facilities and sea view, although I appreciate that its particular layout differed from the example you had seen online.
Luxury is inevitably interpreted differently by different people. Moonfleet deliberately offers a relaxed and unpretentious version of it. We want children to be children, parents to relax and families to spend proper time together without worrying about a toddler making the occasional spirited dash across the room. That informality should, however, sit alongside excellent service, housekeeping and attention to detail, and there are clearly aspects of your experience where we needed to be better.
Our adults only swimming periods are simply intended to provide adults with a couple of quieter windows during the day, rather than suggesting our pool is designed for Olympic training. Balancing the needs of adults and children in a family hotel is something of a fine art, and we believe providing dedicated time for both is a reasonable compromise.
Thank you again for your feedback. I am pleased that you recognised the considerable amount Moonfleet offers families and the opportunity it provides to spend time together in such a wonderful location. We will certainly take the specific operational points you have raised and use them constructively.
Best wishes,
Byron
