Disappointing
The owner came out to find us when we called to say we were a bit lost, she seemed friendly and took us to an upgraded room, as she informed us that they had received a cancellation earlier that day. As we arrived later than anticipated, she said she would explain everything the following morning.
The room was spacious and the bed was comfy. It appears a little tired and dated, with marks on the wall from possible leaks or damp. The ensuite was quite small, but it was clean and tidy. There was some M&S hand wash and a bottle of Radox shower gel which I presume was left to use, towels and a shower cap.
There was some tea and coffee making facilities including a kettle, a nespresso machine - with a bit of water in already, which I would have expected to be empty as you can't be sure how long to water has been there. There was some instant coffee, teabags and sugar - but no milk, apart from a single random milk creamer pod, which is to be used in a Tassmio machine (not even a nespresso machine) so I had to pierce it for a bit of milk, but again, it didn't have a date on it and It wasn't replaced the following day, so we did without milk. It would have been nice to have some welcome biscuits and even a bottle of water or something too, especially with it being such a warm weekend of weather.
The first morning, went down to breakfast and were shown the cereals fruit juice and fruit etc and were just asked if we liked beans. We weren't asked what we would like for breakfast, we were just served a plate with sausage, bacon, egg and beans (or tomato) which was nice quality, but it would have been nice to have been asked what we would like prior. On the first morning the host seemed more interested in the other guests, I noticed too they had cotton napkins and we had paper ones. They were asked if the wanted more toast, but we weren't. Once our plates had been taken, the host seemed to disappear.
We had expected to see the host prior to going out for the day, so she could explain what she hadn't been able to, when we arrived. But she was nowhere to be seen.
The following morning, the day we were leaving, the host knocked on the door to tell us that unfortunately the water was off as there had been a burst in the village, which we understand, can't be helped. We went down for breakfast and again we were greeted fine, but just served breakfast, rather than being asked what we would like and again, once we had finished and the plates had been taken away, the host disappeared.
We booked via booking.com and on there it said that check out was at 10am, so we made our way downstairs into the reception room and waited to be greeted by the host so that we could thank her for the stay and say goodbye, but again there was nobody around. We rang the bell that was on the desk for attention and nobody came. We waited for quite a while as we were waiting for a taxi to pick us up and nobody came.
This was really sad and completely ruined our stay, I find it very rude that the host didn't even say goodbye or wish us a safe journey home.
It would be really helpful to have a little information pack in the room to explain how their B&B works, but there was nothing, so it was all just a bit strange. It's a beautiful B&B, with dated decor, lovely gardens and views, but without that personal touch from the host, it completely ruins it.
I had hoped to return in the future with my husband, as it appeared a beautiful B&B and only a short distance from the busy city centre. My friends were also keen to hear how our stay was; but after our disappointing stay, we wouldn't recommend this B&B to anyone unfortunately.

Disappointed to say the least...
The host Ann, was very officious, not friendly or welcoming. No history or real knowledge of the old 18th century house we were staying and none to read about in our room.
I would like to have had information about the history of the house, the area as I was from Scotland!
I think she was the proprietor, I am not sure, she didn't introduce herself nor ask us anything of ourselves on arrival or for the entire stay unfortunately. She Showed no interest at all.
The whole house felt temperature wise, cold and smelled old and foostie ( my son whispered this as we stood in the entrance hall) we were not greeted with a smile or any friendly welcome.
There was no heating on the entire stay. Maybe if there had been, it wouldn't have smelled and felt as it had.
Our room at first glance looked pretty but in reality, it was very dank. The tired decor, not in keeping with the era of the 1800's with its 80's curtains, black gloss tv stand, and pine furniture.
No fridge, which meant food and fluids we brought from our long journey, couldn't be kept fresh, nor could we keep anything fresh for the duration of our stay.
There were stains on the walls from what looked like water leakage, and general rundown decor entirely throughout our room, everything was tired, dull looking!
There was paint cracking on the wall in the bathroom, there was 1 tooth brush for 3 people, the tiny tooth paste was unable to be used as its contents were brick hard. 2face flannels b
There was Half a 10 ml bottle of shower gel, which didnt get used, super market bought hand liquid soap, not at all disguised in a soap dispenser, just sat there 3/4 contents empty!
It's the little things that matter!
Minimal coffee, like literally, enough for 2 cups, no complimentary biscuits to nibble, had to ask each day for milk, it was not offered. Had to also ask for another mug, as there were only 2 of those too!
The WORST and MOST UPSETTING part, if this wasn't enough; the bed I slept in (single) was so uncomfortable and sore on my entire body due to metal springs digging into me from the mattress, I hardly slept all night, for the 2 nights I stayed.
I feel exhausted, not rested!
I had to throw the bedsheet on to the floor as it had several little stains on it, what looked like blood (not mine or from our party)
At breakfast, Ann the host, asked how we slept, I apologised and expressed that I had, had a terrible night and why. She offered no apology, nor offer to change us rooms either. She then said the double bed was comfy but "didn't know about the single bed", well she did, because I just told her! (No facial expressions throughout the entire stay, no smiles, really just a nothingness. Empty and aloof!)
I find it incredibly disappointing that she even admitted that she didn't know the bed was in disrepair, she offered nothing in response apart from a cold presentation and again, no verbal communication whatsoever about anything. I had hoped she done the right thing and changed the room or even the mattress.
She Just served our breakfast, which was small and simple but tasted ok, she then proceeded to shut the door to the dining room without a word! There was no " have a nice day" nothing!
That stay, actually RUINED our trip, we had planned for years, since my child was little, now 10, to go to Chester Zoo, when our beloved pet passed over the rainbow bridge. I was sore, upset and cranky the whole day, ruining it for my entire family, because of the bed, lack of sleep and an aching body. We had no photos taken together on our trip out because i felt and looked so bad. I have to say, it has been a really difficult few months and we were really needing this break, but as the final morning has arrived, we are actually glad to be leaving.
This god-awful torturous bed, that I had to lay on as the host didnt offer me a replacement was unacceptable by anyones standards, let alone a bed and breakfast facility, the bed should 100% be pain free and comfortable snd it was neither!
I cannot emphasis this matter enough, it really hurt my body!
I do not recommend people stay here.
The service was dispiriting and the house is in great need of refurbishment.
One of our party said hello to the gentleman ( husband) outside gardening, he stood within 3 feet of us, so no excuse not to respond! There was no response from him either. I expect good customer service, friendly and approachable behaviour from the hosts, warm and inviting atmosphere, I was totally disappointed!
Of course this is said with honesty, respect and without prejudice, I hope this is seen as constructive criticism and actions taken to remedy these points. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone.
What hosts need to be aware of is that some times life is hard, (as we mourn the loss of our pet), its also financially difficult in these times too, and kindness, smiles and a friendly host are all basics one should feel and be made a priority not a luxury. The whole experience was nothing special in any way regarding this abode and the experience of staying here! It felt like we were an inconvenience.
On a positive note, the views were lovely, it was quiet and peaceful. The shower was nice!
This morning as we went for breakfast before our departure, there was actually fresh fruit for breakfast, and a dainty fresh floral arrangement on the dining table.
Ann asked my Dad how our zoo trip went, showing a little humility.
She was surprised to learn I was still tired, stating that children have never complained about the said mattress.
I have had a total of 6 hours sleep in the 2 nights we stayed, due to the mattress!!!!
