Delicious evening meal, what a treat
We went to the Drunken Duck as a treat at the end of our holiday. We sat in the bar area as we were sharing the outing with our dog. The menu was quite limited, but each item sounded delicious, unusual and tempting. The menu was also very sympathetic to vegetarians with three choices. One of us chose wood pigeon and it was delicious, full of flavour. The other of us was vegetarian. We both thought that the food here was fabulous and we enjoyed the ambiance in the bar. A place to return to next time we are in the area and want to treat ourselves.

Disappointed
Arrived looking forward to a luxury stay based on previous experiences , admittably some years ago. Our room was stone cold on check-in and while the staff quickly switched on the electric under-floor heating it takes ages to warm the room. The bar and dining areas have lost most of the 'old world' charm. Clean but rather sterile atmosphere , a great shame. Dinner was mixed affair with my choice of rabbit starter and main of venison delicious. My wife's main meal of Pigeon was tough. We had to ask for steak knives which ought to be offered as standard when serving game. The bed was very comfortable with nice soft pillows aiding a good nights sleep. The breakfast menu was really odd with non of the usual fare. A traditional English selection should be offered as guests generally enjoy this as part the overal experience. We all change.
15 years is a long time. We change, things change. Perhaps I was hoping to step back in time when this was our favourite hotel to visit in the Lakes. “Let’s try the Drunken Duck for my birthday - I know it’s been a while”.
The weather on the day of travel was atrocious. The back of the hotel on being shown to our room was a little tired. The rooms were as remembered and the underfloor heating was welcoming.
The bar was as good as before with Loweswater Gold ticking my beer box. The menu had shrunk somewhat and was strong on veg but weak on meat. That said the venison pie and duck were excellent and in my book you can’t go far wrong with a crumble. The staff were friendly and welcoming.
The breakfast menu was also brief and no mention of bacon or sausages - god forbid! We had the steak hash and french toast which was very tasty.
The dining room was too austere for my liking and lacked charm.
As I said, things change.

A beautiful historic country inn near Ambleside with superb food.
We have just enjoyed a delightful short break at The Drunken Duck Inn near Ambleside in The Lake District. This is a gastro pub with guest rooms, a comfortable bar area and separate guest dining areas.
Our room had a super king sized bed and an en-suite bathroom with both a bath and a pan head shower. The shower was fabulous and the bed very comfortable.
The food was outstanding. This is a high end gastro pub that has won awards and rightly so. We both loved the food here which was delicious and of the highest standard. The menu is supported by a good wine list and a well stocked bar.
The staff are both professional and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. They even bring coffee to the room at any time.
Overall we both loved this inn. It was difficult to find fault with our stay here and we both very much look forward to a future return visit. So, a big thank you to the general manager and his excellent team for hosting us. A fabulous stay at The Drunken Duck Inn.

Need to rethink the menus!
OH DEAR- we were looking forward to this trip so much, having been there in 2014 and reviewed it then very highly. Whilst the location has not altered, obviously, the rest has. The staff were very attentive, but it is the overall package that now lets this place down badly. The rooms, whilst clean, ours had an awful spring divan mattress, which meant it was more like whack-a-mole every time we turned over. However, the biggest disappointment was the food. No full English for breakfast, and a very restrictive menu for dinner, which is set for the week, and if you are not vegetarian, or have an intolerance to JUNIPER as my husband does, then frankly you are stuck on 1 starter being available out of the 5 and 2 main courses out of the 5. It clearly asked if you had food allergies or intolerance's but made no effort to cook us anything that we could actually eat. We had originally booked for 3 nights but we left early as a combination of the bed and the poor breakfast choice was enough for us.
