The BEST Cottage/Excellent Pool but unable to use restaurant with dog as inadequate outdoor seating

When looking for a dog friendly place to book for our holiday in Cornwall this place luckily came up in our search. Our cottage turned out to be the BEST place we have stayed at for a UK holiday. It was amazing. Beautiful cottages in a beautiful setting. We had so much space in the cottage we loved it. Beautiful bathrooms. Big lounge, comfy sofas, comfy table and chairs, comfy beds and pillows. Loved the modern kitchen.
Beautiful hotel a short walk from our cottage with amazing indoor Pools, hot tub and sauna with great modern clean changing rooms/showers/lockers. Always Very helpful friendly staff at the hotel reception who provided pool towels.
One problem for us was that dogs are not allowed in the hotel restaurant and we were not able to sit outside in the sun as we would have burnt to death in the heatwave on the hard chairs so we were not able to use the hotel restaurant at all for the week. It would be good if they could have better table and chairs with parasols outside and more information available with menus outside the restaurant for those who cannot enter with a dog. The young girls at the restaurant/bar were not attentive. Therefore you need to provide more information/menus outside the restaurant doors so the customers know what the rules are/what food there is is it buffet/a La carte? Etc.
The other problem we had was that kids under the age of 14 or 15 (can’t remember) had to be accompanied by an adult in the pool which made the holiday difficult for us as most uk pools have the 8+ rule where a child over 8 who can swim does not have to be accompanied by an adult. Kids were allowed in the pool until 7pm and the pool closed at 9pm which worked well for us.
We absolutely loved St Mellion estate and would definitely consider returning for another holiday and will hopefully be able to try their restaurant if they provide better facilities for those with dogs (we had a tiny chihuahua sleeping in a shoulder bag).

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review following your holiday with us.
I am absolutely delighted to hear that your cottage was one of the best places you have stayed for a UK holiday. It is wonderful to know that you loved the space, the setting and the comfort of the cottage, as well as the bathrooms, lounge, beds and modern kitchen.
I am also pleased that you enjoyed the hotel facilities, particularly the indoor pools, hot tub and sauna, and that you found the changing facilities modern and clean. It is lovely to hear that our reception team were helpful and friendly in assisting you with towels and access to the facilities.
I am sorry, however, that being unable to take your dog into the restaurant meant that you were unable to enjoy dining with us during your stay. I completely understand your comments regarding the outdoor seating, particularly during the heatwave. Your suggestions regarding more comfortable outdoor furniture, parasols and clearer information about the restaurant menus and dining options are very helpful.
I am also sorry to hear that you found some of the service at the restaurant and bar to be inattentive. We would always want guests to feel welcomed and well informed, particularly where there may be restrictions affecting where they are able to dine.
Thank you also for sharing your feedback regarding the swimming pool age restrictions. I appreciate that this made things more difficult for your family and understand why you would compare our policy with other leisure facilities. I will ensure your comments are shared with the relevant team.
Overall, I am delighted that you loved your stay at St Mellion Estate and that you would consider returning. We truly appreciate both your wonderful comments and your constructive suggestions, as they help us understand where we are getting things right and where we can improve.
We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you, your family and your four-legged friend back again in the future!
Kind regards,
Mark Ronan

A tired hotel running on fumes

The good:
The bed was really comfortable and bigger than our Superking! Sheets were clean and crisp, and the room service was very good, with tea/coffee/milk/biscuits/water replenished with every clean.
The pool/sauna/steam room/Jacuzzi were great, with separate pool areas for different uses. We did not use the gym, but it looked well equipped.
There were a range of dining areas to suite different tastes, of which we used one, once. We had 4 mezze dishes which cost over £40 - we found the value of the food to be poor, and much better value (in price/choice/quality) existed outside the complex (from our limited use of the restaurant facilities).
The Staff:
Mostly young women. Generally inattentive - all seemed to be 'in training', or at least, that was the impression. For example, the pool locker area uses RFID wrist bands, which are also used to access the facilities via a turnstile (which we of course didn't know until after our first use). Collecting towels from the reception, they didn't ask us if we needed one, was it our first use of the facilities etc., - a general theme throughout - they respond to a specific request without thinking about the why and engaging with the guest. They didn't always know answers to questions about the resort.
By contrast, one of the elder women working the night shift was very helpful and showed my wife the facilities and was prepared to spend time explaining what was on offer.
When we checked-out, nobody asked about our stay.
The room:
Dated - needs a proper refurb. The chairs were unusable (with backs so straight you'd probably crook your neck). The small TV, possibly from the Ark, was Standard Definition only - forget 4k or even HD! No streaming options as the TV was not 'smart' or even connected to WiFi.
The single socket under my bedside table was a challenge to get to - a good crawl on the floor and some dexterity prevailed.
The tiles on the bathroom floor were missing grout in a number of places, and the sealant around the bath looked like it was done after 10 pints. The mirror wasn't heated, so good luck seeing anything after a shower, especially as the extraction didn't work (wouldn't even hold up a piece of the single ply loo roll provided..).
The A/C unit worked, sort of - it was the same as the Holiday Inn we came from, just with 25% of the performance - probably needing maintenance, like the rest of the room.
The edges of the carpet were grey with accumulated dust, and the toilet basin was dirty due to poor cleaning - I had to do it myself with the loo brush, and I managed to get it sparkling, so why couldn't they!
There was grass on the carpet behind the chair, the walls had dust on that wiped off on the hand, the inside (and outside) of the windows were dirty - I really could go on, but the gist is the rooms were dated, the maintenance was poor, and the cleanliness was lacking.
We didn't complain, as it was evident this wasn't a 'room thing' - it was systemic.
The Verdict:
We came to St Mellions after staying in the Holiday Inn at Gloucester - by contrast, that was a palace - perhaps some of the management should stay there to compare and contrast.
In my view, such failures cleanly rest with a disinterested or incapable management - failing to enforce standards and owners unwilling to invest in the upkeep of the rooms, relying on trading from the name - well, that just isn't enough in 2026.
I can't speak to the golfing facilities or the rooms overlooking the golf course.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback following your stay with us.
Whilst I am pleased to hear that you found the bed comfortable and enjoyed the crisp, clean linen, as well as the replenishment of the refreshments in your room, I am very sorry to read about the number of issues you experienced during your stay.
I am also pleased that you enjoyed the pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi, and that you found the facilities to offer a good range of options.
However, I am disappointed to hear your comments regarding your dining experience. I am sorry that you felt the food did not represent good value for money, particularly when compared with other options available outside the resort. This is certainly feedback we take seriously.
Your comments regarding the level of service are also concerning. Whilst we are proud to have many younger members of the team who are developing their experience, guests should never feel that they are left to work things out for themselves or that team members are simply responding to requests without engaging and anticipating their needs.
The example you have given regarding your first visit to the leisure facilities is particularly helpful. We should have ensured that you understood how the RFID wristbands worked and what facilities were available to you, especially if it was your first visit. I am pleased that one of our night team was able to take the time to assist your wife and explain the facilities properly, and I will ensure your positive comments are shared with her.
I am also sorry that nobody took the opportunity to ask about your stay when you checked out. This was clearly a missed opportunity for us to understand your experience and address some of these concerns before your departure.
In particular, I am very sorry that you felt the cleanliness of the toilet, carpet, walls and windows was below an acceptable standard. You should never have felt the need to clean part of your own room during your stay.
Thank you again for your frank feedback. It is disappointing to receive, but it is important that we listen to experiences such as yours and use them constructively.
Kind regards,
Mark Ronan

Golf and spa great - hotel is just in need of some love. It’s just showing age and could do with a refresh of the rooms balconies and common areas. Spa, health’s club and golf are exceptional and every member of staff is polite and helpful just needs some TLC.

Nice comfortable stay.
Only downside was if you want a meal don’t bother ringing from your room as the restaurant won’t answer.
