Disappointing
Before my stay, I explicitly contacted the hotel by email and requested a quiet room on a higher floor. I even received a long and friendly confirmation that this request would of course be taken into account.
Due to my Accor status, I then received an upgrade to a “Junior Suite with Park View,” for which I was of course grateful at first. However, what the hotel conveniently does not mention on their website is the massive five-lane main road between the hotel and the park. Calling this a “park view” is highly misleading — it is essentially a view of a heavily trafficked city-highway. What made this especially absurd was that, despite my prior request for a quiet high-floor room, the hotel assigned me one of the few rooms directly facing this extremely busy road — and on a relatively low floor. The room was unbelievably loud, to the point that sleeping properly was almost impossible. I therefore complained at reception and ultimately had to change rooms from the second night onward. The replacement room was no longer an upgrade. In other words, the “upgrade” effectively resulted in one night in an unusably loud room, followed by two nights in a standard room category.
To be fair, the practical problem itself was solved in a professional manner the next day with the room change. However, the way the reception handled the situation the day before was so unnecessarily arrogant, dismissive, and customer-unfriendly that, combined with the many other deficiencies of the hotel, I ultimately decided that this experience deserved a detailed review.
The hotel overall feels much more like a low-budget group-tour hotel focused on bus tourists than an international 4-star Accor property. Breakfast was closer to a 2-star standard: limited selection, unbelievably loud because of bus groups, and not even basic things like saucers for coffee cups were available unless guests specifically asked for them.
The hotel also has only one extremely small elevator with space for maybe two people with luggage. When buses arrive, chaos is inevitable. I even saw elderly guests carrying suitcases down the narrow stairs from the fifth floor because using the lift was unrealistic. It honestly looked very, very dangerous.
The rooms are worn out and poorly equipped: no luggage rack, soft worn mattresses, thin towels, cheap toilet paper, no paper tissues in the bathroom, no complimentary water, and an espresso machine with exactly one capsule — something I have never seen anywhere else in the world. The minibar water costs around 3 EUR for a small bottle. Exactly the same brand of water sells for 45 cents in the supermarket next door.
Another absurd detail was the tiny television, which was strangely hidden behind a cabinet near the entrance area. You could barely see it from the bed, and certainly not from the desk or the chairs. The entire room layout felt poorly thought out and impractical.
The minibar policy in the Junior Suite was also bizarre. Because of the complimentary upgrade, I appreciated the minibar inclusion for the first night. However, if I had actually paid the significantly higher Junior Suite rate, I would seriously question why the minibar is included only once despite paying the same room rate every night. Should guests book three separate one-night stays just to receive the same minibar inclusion every evening?
The reception experience, however, was by far the worst part of the stay. I have rarely encountered such an arrogant, dismissive, and unfriendly employee in an Accor hotel, especially someone carrying the title “Front Office Supervisor.”
Instead of listening professionally and trying to solve the issue, the entire interaction immediately became defensive, aggressive and confrontational. The tone was condescending from the beginning, and there was absolutely no sense of customer orientation, hospitality, or professionalism. At one point, I was even told that all rooms were “soundproofed” — which, considering the extreme traffic noise in the room, was honestly almost absurd. Making such claims instead of acknowledging obvious problems comes across as unserious and unprofessional.
Rather than acknowledging shortcomings or attempting to find solutions, the attitude conveyed was essentially that guest complaints were an annoyance.
The hotel is focused on bus tourists, but experienced Accor guests immediately notice whether staff are used to dealing with frequent travelers and status customers. Here, the impression was exactly the opposite. The hotel seemed entirely unaccustomed to dealing with individual travelers who spend many nights per year in hotels and therefore expect a certain minimum level of professionalism, service culture, and customer care.
All of these shortcomings — the noise, the poor room layout, the cost-cutting, the weak breakfast, and the dismissive service attitude — are things experienced business travelers simply would not accept. For short-stay bus tourists, however, many of these details probably do not matter or are not even noticed. That seems to be exactly the clientele this hotel is optimized for.
I ultimately had to escalate the situation before I was finally treated with the level of professionalism and respect one should normally expect at a Mercure hotel. That should simply never be necessary in an international 4-star brand hotel.
This hotel may work for undemanding bus tourism, but it does not meet the standards expected from a Mercure hotel.
