One of the Best Hotels We Stayed at in Spain
After staying in several hotels during our trip through Spain and France, Hotel Ercilla ended up being one of our absolute favorites. If I ever return to Bilbao, I wouldn’t even think twice. I’d book this hotel again.
The location is outstanding. It’s right in the heart of Bilbao’s elegant Indautxu district, making it incredibly easy to explore on foot. You’re just minutes from Plaza Moyúa, Gran Vía, the city’s premier shopping street, Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga Bilbao), and countless cafés, pintxos bars, and restaurants. Even the Guggenheim Museum, Casco Viejo (Old Town), and the riverside promenade are all within a comfortable walk. We rarely needed transportation because everything felt so accessible.
The welcome set the tone for the stay. The doormen were genuinely helpful from the moment we arrived, assisting with our luggage and making us feel immediately at ease. Inside the lobby, guests are welcomed with complimentary water and sweets, a thoughtful touch after a day of sightseeing. Another thing we appreciated was how well everyone spoke English, which made communication effortless.
Our room on the sixth floor was spacious, comfortable, and overlooked the hotel’s main entrance. It was quiet despite being in such a central location, allowing us to enjoy a great night’s sleep. The bathroom was equally impressive. The toiletries felt premium, and I especially appreciated the heated towel rack, one of those small details that makes a stay feel just a little more luxurious.
The lobby level is another highlight. There’s a stylish bar and restaurant where you can enjoy breakfast, coffee, drinks, or simply unwind after exploring the city. I also loved that they included a dedicated workspace with charging points, perfect for travelers who need to catch up on emails or work remotely.
What really stood out was how polished the entire experience felt. From the attentive staff and comfortable rooms to the excellent location and thoughtful amenities, Hotel Ercilla consistently exceeded our expectations.
For anyone visiting Bilbao, whether for sightseeing, shopping, or food, I can’t recommend this hotel enough. It offers everything you need for a comfortable stay while putting the city’s best attractions within easy walking distance. It was easily one of the highlights of our trip, and I look forward to staying here again

An old Embassy Suites hotel?
The staff at the hotel was very kind and accommodating. Like everyone we met in Spain, we felt very welcomed by them. They were extremely helpful when we needed something additional like a bag of ice for a knee sprain.
The problem with this hotel is simply that it’s very apparent it is old. The air inside smelled old. Our room, which was supposed to be an upgrade, appeared to overlook a concrete school play area. We had to keep our curtains closed because of the configuration of this square Hotel, we could see into each other’s rooms. Consequently, it felt very closed in.
The corridors were dark and the elevators extremely small. It would be difficult for a family with kids and luggage to fit all together in there.
The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of foods, but for that amount of money (30 euros per person) we could have had something much nicer and for much less cost nearby. In fact, we did go out after our first morning and explored the amazing local cuisine.
The one thing I really enjoyed about this hotel is the rooftop bar. The view was terrific and it was easy to get oriented with the small city spread out below us.
However, I would not return to this hotel. It really looked like an old Embassy suites. I honestly expected more of a Marriott affiliated property.

AC does not cool the room
No functioning AC. When we got to the room, it was warm. They said the AC was working and we just needed to wait for the room to cool down. We sat there for 2 hours waiting for them to fix it or for the room to cool down and trying to get help from our travel agent and Marriott. None of that happened. After 2 hours, the temperature never changed at all. They told us they had no other rooms with any different AC. So we left and went to another hotel that had real AC. After we booked another hotel and we checked out they told our travel agent that they had other rooms we could have moved to. They claimed their AC was working and refused a refund. Note: I am elderly and have a difficult time with the heat. (Yes, I told them that.)

Good location for stay in Bilbao. No pool and hotel that needs update is downside. Staff, servicelevel and breakfast is very good and makes up for downsides.
Rooftop is nice but cocktails not good. Recommend to order either wine or beer.

Great disappointment in Bilbao
Very bad experience in Bilbao. We paid more than 350 € for one night for 3 people. It took us more than half an hour to check in even though there was no one waiting and we had the loyalty card. They gave us a room without air conditioning in the middle of a heat wave (the worst part is that they knew it; they told us later that the air conditioning didn't work on the first floors). After an hour, following several visits to the front desk, we managed to get them to move us to a lower-category room, completely interior and dark. When opening the sofa bed, we couldn't access the bathroom or the closet.
The rooms are not very new, they have carpet and no ventilation in the bathroom. The only good thing, the towels.
Inefficient staff, not an apology, not any attention.
It is clearly a mass-market hotel that does not care about the customer experience. We will not return.
