Magnificent lobby. Rooms can be excellent or appalling. See first

Wonderful historic hotel hanging on by its fingertips. Wonderfully authentic, but very run down. A magnificent place. I’ve stayed a few times, once in a wonderful room, once in a room that was disgraceful. My biggest piece of advice……look at your room first
It also has long term residents, which is never a good sign for a hotel.

Avoid this place at all costs

Avoid This Place at All Costs
We stayed at this hotel annually for seven years while attending Cheyenne Frontier Days, usually in the same room. Unfortunately, our most recent stay was unacceptable and raised serious concerns about cleanliness, safety, and management.
At check-in, we were told our room was not ready and asked to return after 1:30 p.m. We came back around 2:30 p.m. and received our keys, but housekeeping met us at the door and opened the room to reveal that it was still filthy. We were told it would be cleaned within 30 minutes, so we left for dinner.
When we returned, neither key worked properly. After another trip to the front desk, we received replacement keys, but only one worked. Later, we discovered there were no hand towels or washcloths in the room. The front desk provided three hand towels and what appeared to be an old cleaning rag to use as a washcloth. After we showed it to the housekeeping manager, Chaz, she replaced it with two clean washcloths.
The most serious issue occurred when my wife stepped on a nail in the carpet while getting ready for bed. Thankfully, it did not puncture her foot. I showed the nail to Chaz the next morning and requested that the room be thoroughly cleaned while we were out. When we returned around 8 p.m., the room had not been touched. That evening, I found three more nails in the carpet.
Our attempts to address these issues with management were equally disappointing. No one contacted us after checkout despite our request to speak with the general manager or owner. After multiple calls, the general manager, Meri, finally returned my call. Rather than taking our safety concerns seriously, she accused me of confronting Chaz unfairly and even suggested that I had brought the nails into the room myself. The owner never contacted us.
After seven years of staying here, we will not return. A dirty room is bad enough, but multiple nails left in the carpet created a genuine safety hazard. The lack of follow-up and the management's dismissive response made the situation even worse. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend this hotel.

It was not representative of their pictures. It is old, dirty and cluttered. The shower ceiling was collapsing.

Rethink your choice

The hotel is old which we normally love but it is dirty. Our room was disgustingly old. Player falling off the ceiling, smelled horrible, carpets were dirty - didn’t take off my socks. Restaurant is shut down - website shows a great restaurant and bar had a sign the whole time saying closed today open tomorrow but never opened.
Disappointing experience & the hotel needs to be honest!

Don’t be fooled by the great location

I am kicking myself that I didn’t read the most recent reviews, as I would have chosen another hotel, but when I asked at the airport desk, the Plains was recommended. It has an excellent location but only if you’re not facing the main highway entrance (room 234) and maybe it was the bar below or another, but some lunatic woman had a lot to say in a very loud voice for about 10 min after MN. The ancient window AC unit had a roar of a fan that could not block out her voice or highway traffic while booming in our ears every time it went on.
And like all of the other poor reviews, the Plains is very tired and is a shadow of its previous glory. The picture one sees when looking at the Plains online is of the beautiful lobby. It is lovely but had I seen my room before we booked, I would never have stayed: stained dirty carpet, nasty bathroom floor( neither of us had the courage to take a shower in the icky tub), no hangers, broken towel rack, inadequate bedding w no extra blankets, terrible pillows, bathroom sink in main room, inexplicably large refrigerator considering minimal floor real estate, no ice anywhere in hotel except third floor, blah blah blah.
Very sad to see downtown Cheyenne depressed like a lot of small towns across America. Not only does the downtown (let’s face it- this ain’t a city) need a huge influx of people/money, but the historic Plains Hotel needs some serious investors to restore its former glory. Meanwhile, even at only $140/night, it is so not worth it.
PS. We enjoyed the Depot Museum’s (across the street) miniature scaled train set on second floor, especially when getting details about its origins ( I know nothing about trains) from the docent, Rich.
PSS. Had a very tasty brisket sandwich at Sanfords, a super zany spot around the corner
