Could have been nice

Cherry Valley Hotel is built in the shape of the nearby Newark Earthworks, an ancient gathering and spiritual site, with astronomical features. The building is a hexagon with the courtyard in the center, and a hook coming out from one side. It also has a lower level such that the halls wander up and down unpredictably. It is difficult to navigate, and the signage is cryptic. I had to go online to find a map. We asked an employee how to get back to our room during one of our never-ending walks from the lobby to our room, and he seemed taken aback and mystified himself. We ran into only one other person in the corridor, a young woman who remarked in passing that the place is a maze, and she prayed she was going the right way. The main vibe of the hotel is creepy. One wanders through endless identical, deserted, barely lit corridors finding oneself unexpectedly back at the beginning. The indoor pool is a dark, swampy green, underlit by lights. My only thought when we stumbled on it was, I wonder what is hidden in there? The hotel is full of ancient symbols. The Horned God, an ancient Celtic god of nature, is everywhere, and a puzzling choice in proximity to a prehistoric Native American site. Areas of the hotel are named after animal totems from various cultures, such as Jade Owl, and Golden Bear. The hotel is run down, deserted, not particularly clean, and the staff is superficially friendly, with a hostile undertone. Our room had a giant image of the Horned God on the wall, the kind with eyes that follow you everywhere. It was a relief that the room had a sliding door to the parking lot, so we could open the door to the sun and breeze. The creepiness was more annoying than terrifying. Why is it so dark, ill-kept, hard to navigate, and weird? Do not recommend unless you enjoy haunted houses.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a… memorable review. We have to admit, “never-ending walks,” “cryptic signage,” and “I wonder what is hidden in there?” is certainly one of the more creative descriptions we’ve received of Cherry Valley Hotel.
While we may not be able to change the hexagonal design or prevent our hallways from occasionally feeling like a real-life escape room, we absolutely can—and should—continue improving the things we have control over. Your comments regarding lighting, cleanliness, signage, and the overall condition of the property are all areas we take seriously and are continuing to work on.
As for the Horned God watching you from the walls… we’ll leave that one to our design team and the ancient spirits of the Newark Earthworks. We can, however, promise that our staff are not instructed to mysteriously reappear at the end of the hallway or send guests on an accidental archaeological expedition to find their rooms.
We’re sorry the atmosphere of the hotel wasn't what you were hoping for, but we do appreciate the honest feedback. We hope that on a future visit, the only mystery you encounter is deciding which of our dining options to enjoy—not whether you’ll ever find your room again.

Sour Cherries

This is our second stay at the Cherry Valley Hotel. At first glance the hotel is lovely, with some need of updating (especially the carpets). The rooms are roomy and have a nice sitting area. However, the first time we were there, the heat was on despite making adjustments to the thermostat. We slept with the sliding glass door open, which did not feel all the way safe. The second time we were there the tv didn’t work in the room. We contacted the front desk who said they would send maintenance. After waiting 40 min or more we cancelled our request and went to bed. I mentioned to the front desk that this is the second time we were disappointed with the hotel, and they said they would contact their supervisor. However we were never contacted.

Thank you for giving Cherry Valley Hotel a second stay and for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad you continue to enjoy the spacious rooms and sitting areas, but we’re disappointed that both visits came with issues that took away from your overall experience.
Having the room too warm during your first stay and then experiencing a television issue during your second visit is frustrating enough, but we’re especially sorry that you waited more than 40 minutes for assistance and ultimately went to bed without the issue being resolved. Even more importantly, someone from our team should have followed up with you after you were told a supervisor would reach out. That follow-up should not have been missed.
We are continuing to work through updates to the property, including our carpeting, but we know that those improvements only go so far if we aren't taking care of the basics and following through when guests need assistance.
We truly appreciate you giving us a second chance, and we're sorry we didn't make that stay better than the first. We hope you'll consider giving us another opportunity to provide the experience you should have received both times.

Overall property worn down and need of renovation. The staff was very nice. The rooms were clean but need to be upgraded. The balcony showed dry rot and needs to be repaired. Thought the nightly rate was too high for the condition of the property. I would not stay there again.

Avoid at all costs

Absolutely avoid this property. It is filthy and an unkept space. Asked for my room to be cleaned twice. Didn’t even take the trash out. A colleague still had food from the previous occupant in their fridge. Hair in the beds, showers and floors. Gross. House keeping manager showed up to inspect room claims she cleaned it. Picked hair out the tub, flushed it. “Sorry about that”. Absurd.

After your concerns were brought to our attention, our Executive Housekeeper personally came to the room to inspect and address the items that were reported. During that follow-up, the bathroom was re-cleaned, although a hair was unfortunately missed and later brought to her attention. We understand that, after already having concerns about the cleanliness of the room, even one missed item can reinforce the feeling that the issue was not properly addressed.
We are also concerned to hear about the trash not being removed and your colleague finding food left behind in their refrigerator. Those are items that should have been caught before the rooms were made available to guests.
While we did make an effort to personally address the concerns during your stay, it is clear from your experience that we did not leave you feeling confident that the issues had been resolved. We apologize for that and appreciate the feedback. Your comments have been shared with our Housekeeping team as we continue working on improving consistency and attention to detail.

I requested the foldout be made up, which it wasn’t. The mattress pad that was on there already had a giant brown stain in the center. When we tried to call guest services, nobody answered. My husband had to go down and ask for bedding after 9 that night. We were given a bag that had the sheet set with some sort of weird crunchy brown blanket. Then had to ask for another mattress pad. My daughter froze all night because of that terrible blanket. Terrible service.
