My wife and I celebrated a special occasion with a weekend getaway to Red Wing and a stay at the St. James Hotel. The experience was wonderful from start to finish. The staff helped make our weekend even more memorable when they accommodated my request to have roses and champagne waiting in our room as a surprise for my wife. She was absolutely delighted. The room was comfortable and well-appointed, and the amenities were excellent. The exceptional service and attention to detail made our stay truly special. We look forward to returning in the future.

The Hotel is beautiful and our room was lovely. The staff and waitstaff were wonderful. Our dinner and breakfast were delicious. The only surprise was the train whistles!

Great hotel if you like a beautiful, historic hotel. If you are looking for modern hotel, this probably isn't for you.

The best place to stay by far in Red Wing. Centrally located in downtown including adjacent to the Amtrak station which is how we arrived. They also have good bikes for rent - perfect as we didn’t have a car. Well maintained historic facility with interesting old photos, plaques, and artifacts everywhere throughout the building. The early glory of the place remains intact.
The restaurant, Scarlet, is a destination unto itself and open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails, with plenty of outdoor seating, having great views of both the Mississippi and the railroad - perfect for river and train buffs. But this is more than matched by the cuisine, very well prepared by obviously exceptional chefs, presented by a cheerful and knowledgeable waitstaff. We ate there several times, each was excellent and all dishes had a little twist beyond what would be expected.
There are some other places to eat downtown, and others quite a long walk to the west side of town where most motels are clustered, (the gap being not a particularly pleasant connection, though eventually, Red Wing might make this better).
The hotel is a bit pricey for a small town but a good example of “you get what you pay for”. The rooms are very nice, if I have one quibble, it would be the tiny single soap, shampoo, and conditioner squeeze packages provided - these are something more inline with a Motel 6 than a grand hotel.

Beautiful Historic Hotel

Gracious hotel with lots of artifacts and historical information on display. Great information about the history of Red Wing. Lovely gift shop off the lobby.
We ate breakfast and lunch at Scarlett- good food and interesting menu. We had dinner at The Port, which has nice ambience and very good food.
Spent the afternoon wandering around the neighborhood. Cute shops, railroad depot and a park overlooking the Mississippi River.
We stayed there while following the Great River Road, and would highly recommend. Cute town.
