This is a magnificent grand hotel with a remarkable history which is chronicled in photos and museum cases all over the hotel. Located adjacent to the Alamo, there are even reenactments presented daily on the lawn just outside the front door. This time we stayed in the Lily Langtry Suite and it was wonderful. It consists of a parlour, a bedroom, and 2 full bathrooms which we used individually. Furnished in the period of the late 1800's, it was clean and comfortable. The infamous Menger Bar is a must to visit and staff there are full of ghost stories. They even have a printed pamphlet of them all. It is a glorious building with rooms of all types. We eventually hope to visit them all but the amenities are lacking now. I was told that the State of Texas operates the hotel now and I can see the difference: Parking runs $60+/night which I thought was ridiculous, so we parked for at a nearby garage for $43. There used to be a functioning restaurant on site but it sits idle now. No room service any more or morning breakfast. That was disappointing, but it won't stop us from going back!

Dereliction of duty

Sadly, our much anticipated stay at The Menger was nowhere near expectation. The State of Texas took ownership last year saying their mission was to protect and preserve this historic property. They’re failing miserably if you’ve read reviews from before and after they took over.
It is beautiful AT A GLANCE, but upon entering the building, its ragged reality becomes only too clear.
The lobby furniture is in tatters and every surface is covered in dust. The air conditioning in the lobby, elevators or hallways is out and the staff said it hasn’t been working “for a while”. There are box fans scattered about, but nowhere near enough to be effective.
Half the elevators are marked “out of service” necessitating L-O-N-G walks down endless corridors.
We had three rooms for our family. None were as clean as one might expect, but two were particularly gross, especially the bathrooms. We requested fresh towels and additional toilet paper on the second day. No backup toilet roll was provided and the product provided is the absolute lowest quality paper.
(ADVICE: pack a roll of your own!)
My request was never filled. After passing a maid in the hallway, I convinced her to simply give me the needed items. As I walked away, another guest came out of his room complaining that their room had not been cleaned nor had they received requested items either.
The dining room is closed and none of the staff know why or if it will be reopened. Eating breakfast at a taco shop outside the hotel wasn’t quite what we had in mind.
Each room has a Smart TV but there is no Internet connections. When we called the desk, we were informed that there are no rooms with WiFi or connected internet.
The valet service signage says the cost is $54 for in and out service or $24 for parking only. Both vehicles were charged over $100 for the two night stay although one never left the parking lot.
Someone needs to step in and tell the “owners” that they NOT “preserving” this historic gem, but are destroying one of our treasures.

I love the Menger. I've stayed 30 plus times over the past 10 years.
The rooms are great. The new restaurant is an added bonus.
The only complaint is the pool carpet. We've the years it has not worn well. It moldy and smells like a zoo. Nasty! My feet were black.
Hope that new pool flooring is in the plans this fall.

Even though there was an issue where I was double charged for parking the staff was helpful. Keep in mind it is an older hotel so you get the charm but not always the amenities.

The hotel is nice & clean. Do not expect rainbows & unicorns. It is a historic monument to rich Texas history.
The valet parking is ridiculously expensive!!!’ I arrived there at 9:30pm & left at 8:30am the next morning. Cost $60!!!!!!!
