An amazing hotel in a magical place

Just spent 5 days in magical Thun, at the perfect spot. The restaurant overlooks the river and the castle and church tower up on the hill. The artisticly decorated rooms and very comfortable beds made for an extremely relaxing stay. There was a lovely choice of food for breakfast and the staff were polite and helpful. Would go back again without question!

No sleep for days

This is the first bad review I’ve ever written. I’m a busy guy and don’t spend a lot of time on my computer so when I do write a review ( and I’ve maybe done 12 in my life ) it to commend a business for going above and beyond and I’ve never felt it necessary to put down a possible struggling business
For the money we paid for this hotel I felt obligated to write my first poor review
The check in staff was rude and un helpful
The rooms were almost uninhabitable especially for 2 people
The air conditioning was non existent and our room 130 had one window that opened to a back allley with walls on all sides that allowed no air
The room never got below 90 degrees Fahrenheit the whole time we were there
They almost insultingly leave a 3”x3” usb powered fan in the room that wouldn’t blow out a candle
We travel around Europe quite a bit and are familiar with small rooms but this took it to a way new level
You had to brush your teeth sitting on the bed as the only sink in room was 16” from bed
There was no room for luggage and we spent every second in room tripping over each other and our luggage and it made it very difficult for the 2 of us to get ready for a wedding we were attending
The shower was great and the location was amazing it’s a shame they don’t focus on their accommodations and guest relations
Highly disappointed

Fabulous Location, Cramped Rooms

Hotel Aare Thun is a modern hotel perfectly situated along the Aare River and within minutes of everything: Old Town, train station, shopping, restaurants, etc. The location is easily 5 stars. Our boutique room was nicely outfitted with leather details and custom leather bins in the cubbies, a mini fridge, a Nespresso machine, comfortable bed and a wonderful shower. BUT the room was uncomfortably cramped (one of the smallest hotel rooms we’ve ever had in Europe) with no space whatsoever to open up one suitcase without tripping on it and certainly not two.
Whatever designer thought it was a good idea to put the sink basin on the desk in the bedroom should be fired – seriously AWFUL design choice particularly if you’re traveling with a partner who wants to sleep later than you. There was so little room between the sink and the bed that I could sit on the side of the bed and brush my teeth without moving.
The hotel does not have A/C but got us a fan on night two of our three- night stay, which helped make sleeping more comfortable. The room was too small to keep the window open – as the front desk suggested – without crashing into it.
Breakfast was good with all the items you’d expect in Switzerland. GF bread was available if ordered in advance. Like many hotels in Switzerland, they use packaged GF bread/rolls that take 15-20 minutes to heat up. The restaurant/breakfast area overlooks the Aare on a quiet street, which makes for a pleasant way to start your day.
Hotel Aare offers discounted rates at the underground parking garage right outside the entrance to the hotel, which was a great convenience.
It’s not a bad hotel, but I gave it an overall 3 star rating because the room was cramped and dysfunctional. Would we stay here again? Yes, but only if a larger room was available.

Magical views and stellar service!

Wow! Our family of 5 had a fantastic stay at this hotel. We booked two rooms - both with Aare river views. One of the rooms was a corner room with two sides of wall to wall windows highlighting stunning views of the rivers and the beautiful Obere Schleuse (Upper Lock Bridge) built in the 1700s and decorated with floral displays spanning the bridge. We had 3 or so balconies and French doors that opened to let in the fresh air and to take in the amazing views. It seemed as if we were floating over the river! It truly was a unique and breathtaking room! We enjoyed having breakfast and cocktails outside on the charming patio overlooking the river. It was a delightful place to sit and enjoy the views. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming! We loved the town and enjoyed the sites. A magical place and many thanks for making our stay so special!

We would not book here again.

The hotel is conveniently located directly on the rushing Aare. Anyone who is disturbed by the noise should book somewhere else. Our room was strange, all gray in gray-green, brown, with superfluous gray store across the wall, not for depressives. Miserable lighting and little daylight as half of the room has outside wall instead of windows. The room is much too narrow, the sink is not in the bathroom, but right next to the bed on the desk, so to speak, with the tap so close to the wall that it is difficult to operate. In the bathroom there is a great shower but no storage facilities. There is little closet space for two people, especially only few possibilities for hanging. No storage for suitcases or shoes. It is well cleaned, very clean, the cleaning staff does not speak German. Good are the ritual products provided and water in the refrigerator. Coffee/tea maker available, but due to the tightness in the cupboard compartment, even after pulling out the water tank is difficult to fill. Tea selection very limited, no unflavoured teas. Good breakfast, but staff poorly equipped. Employees run like crazy, but barely keep up with filling up the buffet, dishes and coffee machine. The scrambled eggs are inedible, apparently from the bag, otherwise the food is very good, especially the cheese plate. The breakfast room is too small if the hotel is fully booked. The room is also the restaurant Freienhof, but has no atmosphere for the evening, rather that of a good canteen. The reception staff is very friendly.
There must also be other rooms here, at least according to the photos on the homepage.
