Pretty good but not quite great

We stayed in this hotel for a week's winter holiday and took part in most aspects of their weekly winter program. It should be noted that we did book through an nternal agent and not directly with the hotel. I have highlighted the main points below:
Facilities:
- the hotel has ski and boot storage rooms. Both are quite good albeit the boot room is a little tight if you get more than 4 people at once.
- Spa and Wellness: there are 2 steam rooms/dampfbaeder and 2 saunas. The area is split between 2 locations. The outside whirlpool is nice but at 34°C too cold. The Baumhaus as a resting room is very nice and a great idea. Overall there are just enough resting spaces and saunas for the number of guests when we stayed. Plus the opening times are quite limiting when the weather is not that great.
Rooms: the rooms are designed in the typical German Guesthouse style with separate mattresses and duvets and 70s interiors, mainly w.r.t. to the use of wood and the bathroom decor. The room we had (type Enzian) was a little small and a bigger clothes drying area would have been great. There is a large balcony so in other seasons that can be used and then the room design is fine. Although a twin or double room should have two chairs in my opinion. The room was very clean.
Restaurant/Food: the breakfast was buffet style and more than adequate, there is a lot of choice. Unfortunately the warm food isn't always filled up quickly enough to keep up with the number of guests. There is a picnic area where you can make your lunch which is absolutely excellent. The tables are spacious although the benches are not that comfortable. The evening meal is a buffet for warm and cold starters, with soup and the mian course served to the table. Desert is sometimes buffet, sometimes served at the table. Overall the quality and choice were good but often quite salty. Service varied from very speedy to almost being ignored.
Entertainment: there is something being put on almost every night and the staff are doing their best to entertain. The service at the bar is better than the service during the meal.
Staff: the staff are generally very helpful and friendly. I got the feeling that the Chef of the house was a little stuck up and I found it difficult to ask him for advice w.r.t. trips etc. But that was just my experience.
Excursions: very good. The guide tried to make the most of the situation presented and was very nice and helpful.
Overall this is a good hotel but it is the little things that could make it great. E.g. a few events were called off due to bad weather which is not a problem, but the communication in regards to possible rearrangements was not that good. It was not communicated that we could borrow snow shoes when there was no walk organised from the hotel. And although it stated that you should be at dinner by 19.30 at that time often the buffet parts were nearly empty and not being refilled so we missed out. The welcome meeting was a case of basically being told 'you are now in Austria so you do as we do' and did not feel very welcoming as all the things some guests have done in the past were lamented. Plus it was scheduled for 6pm on a Sunday when the Spa area is then open until 8pm. Dinner times weren't adjusted either so you could not make use of the extra time in the Spa which was a shame.
The 4star rating is a rounded up 3.8 not a rounded down 4.2 for the above reasons. It tries to be a family hotel but is too big to be just that. And does not have the attitude to be an upmarket family hotel...yet. We may come back during a different season but have stayed elsewhere in winter which we preferred.

A wonderful hiking experience with excellent service, food and faclities

We spent a week in Mühlbach and the experience was very enjoyable, indeed. The hotel arranges daily hikings to the mountains and the staff guides really do know the area and can tell numerous stories about the nature and history. Also the electric mountain bikes are definitely worth trying as they offer "same sweat, but more to see". The hiking and biking information binders deserve a special mention, we've never seen anything coming even close to the detail offered. No wonder that most guest appeared to be long-standing repeat customers.

Very good hotel with friendly staff and good food

Very good hotel, in a very serene village. Nice rooms, bathrooms a bit small and separate from toilet. If they would combine the toilet and bathroom it would be more spacious. Lot's of rooms aren't accessible via the elevator but by stairs, and after a full day of skiing it can be exhausting to reach your room. Excellent cleaning and very hygienic. Nice interior and every day they dress up your table differently, very lovely and hospitable. Very friendly staff and owners. Food is excellent and tasty, but a bit more choice of fish would be better. It's the first time in a hotel in Austria that we couldn't choose fish every day. Large parking lot. Welness area is divided in two areas and has everything, sometimes the towels were used up and most of the times the cups were used up, so maybe a quicker inspection by the staff to restock. The tepidarium is top! Had a very nice stay here.

6 Sterne mindestens
