Pretty good but not quite great
Facilities:
- the hotel has ski and boot storage rooms. Both are quite good albeit the boot room is a little tight if you get more than 4 people at once.
- Spa and Wellness: there are 2 steam rooms/dampfbaeder and 2 saunas. The area is split between 2 locations. The outside whirlpool is nice but at 34°C too cold. The Baumhaus as a resting room is very nice and a great idea. Overall there are just enough resting spaces and saunas for the number of guests when we stayed. Plus the opening times are quite limiting when the weather is not that great.
Rooms: the rooms are designed in the typical German Guesthouse style with separate mattresses and duvets and 70s interiors, mainly w.r.t. to the use of wood and the bathroom decor. The room we had (type Enzian) was a little small and a bigger clothes drying area would have been great. There is a large balcony so in other seasons that can be used and then the room design is fine. Although a twin or double room should have two chairs in my opinion. The room was very clean.
Restaurant/Food: the breakfast was buffet style and more than adequate, there is a lot of choice. Unfortunately the warm food isn't always filled up quickly enough to keep up with the number of guests. There is a picnic area where you can make your lunch which is absolutely excellent. The tables are spacious although the benches are not that comfortable. The evening meal is a buffet for warm and cold starters, with soup and the mian course served to the table. Desert is sometimes buffet, sometimes served at the table. Overall the quality and choice were good but often quite salty. Service varied from very speedy to almost being ignored.
Entertainment: there is something being put on almost every night and the staff are doing their best to entertain. The service at the bar is better than the service during the meal.
Staff: the staff are generally very helpful and friendly. I got the feeling that the Chef of the house was a little stuck up and I found it difficult to ask him for advice w.r.t. trips etc. But that was just my experience.
Excursions: very good. The guide tried to make the most of the situation presented and was very nice and helpful.
Overall this is a good hotel but it is the little things that could make it great. E.g. a few events were called off due to bad weather which is not a problem, but the communication in regards to possible rearrangements was not that good. It was not communicated that we could borrow snow shoes when there was no walk organised from the hotel. And although it stated that you should be at dinner by 19.30 at that time often the buffet parts were nearly empty and not being refilled so we missed out. The welcome meeting was a case of basically being told 'you are now in Austria so you do as we do' and did not feel very welcoming as all the things some guests have done in the past were lamented. Plus it was scheduled for 6pm on a Sunday when the Spa area is then open until 8pm. Dinner times weren't adjusted either so you could not make use of the extra time in the Spa which was a shame.
The 4star rating is a rounded up 3.8 not a rounded down 4.2 for the above reasons. It tries to be a family hotel but is too big to be just that. And does not have the attitude to be an upmarket family hotel...yet. We may come back during a different season but have stayed elsewhere in winter which we preferred.

6 Sterne mindestens
