What A Nice Place For a Holiday

There are two special things about this place: the small train serving breakfast in the restaurant and the cake. Both are little details that made the holiday here a very special one.
The hotel is very nice and unique in this area. The retro look is very nice and pleasant. The room was very spacious and the view was great. The room had a double, very comfortable bead as well as a spare bed in a space like another room.
The dinner was very good with soup, main course and desert – delicious. For a cold winter evening it was the best we could have. The service was very good and fast. Beginning of December the place was not crowded and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The location is absolutely amazing.

We will not return.

Unpleasant manager, shower and toilet in one room, no shower gel in the shower, no cosmetic tissues, room relatively small,
Food was mediocre, breakfast buffet was acceptable,
Mold on the balcony door, very worn-out room, the water in the pool
is too cold (presumably because the water is always
circulated, no ORF reception, in my opinion, not a 3-star hotel.

Terrible.

We were mother, children, grandma and 1 small dog but only registered in the inn.
When we arrived the first thing we were scolded about the dog, then we were put in the dining room in the last corner and we were told in barbaric tone that the dog should only be in the last corner and the sentence ended with "and so it is and out". I'm 72 years old, I've always had a dog for 25 years, but nothing like this has ever happened. I'm sure we'll never visit this place again. Just terrible.

Mariazellbahn Hotel on start of mountain section

Winterbach is a request stop on the start of the mountain section of the Mariazell (not all trains go as far as Winterbach and some trains are "request" so tell the guard to get off!!! It has great views of the valley below. "Winterbach" is basically the hotel , thats it apart from the station. Great for the station and for walking . It was -7/-9 when we arrived and this is a big place so was not 70 degrees on the inside but that is understandable . It is really a big pension (B&B) rather than a hotel and offers really good prices for B&B. It was 100Euro for 3 people with a continental breakfast.
If you drive and are looking for the car park , driver 400metres after you see the hotel further up the single track B road and its on your right.
Stunning views met us in the morning after heavy snow . if visiting Mariazellbahn its a great stop as you are 100m from the station but remember a lot of trains turn round at L/bachmulle below in the valley.
Quite , clean , children room with model railways !
Glad we stopped !

Great family hotel, great views, recommended to railfans

Hotel Winterbach is located on a ridge above a valley, just off road B39 between Frankenfels and Scheibbs. Extremely quiet. No lift. Good rooms (some with balconies). Small fun park for young children. Affordable prices (half-pension is a bargain). Excellent buffet breakfast. Cheerful service by the family, but hardly any English spoken. This hotel is highly recommended to those interested by the narrow-gauge Mariazellerbahn railway. Its Winterbach station is directly under the hotel. From the south-facing rooms you can watch each train 3 times as it climbs in loops above the valley. As a bonus, a model railway brings dishes to the guests in the dining room !
