A wonderful three-night stay in August with unforgettable Mont Blanc views
The hotel itself is beautiful, comfortable and exceptionally well maintained. Everything was spotlessly clean throughout our stay.
What particularly impressed us was the staff. Everyone we encountered was genuinely friendly, welcoming and helpful, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere without ever being intrusive.
Breakfast was excellent, with a very good selection and high-quality products, and we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 dish dinners as well. The half-board arrangement worked perfectly for our three-night stay and made the evenings particularly relaxing after spending the day walking in the mountains.
The location is superb, not only for the views but also for enjoying the surrounding area. We were able to start lovely walks directly from the hotel, which was exactly what we were looking for.
We arrived by car and appreciated the free hotel parking, which was convenient throughout our stay.
Overall, Alpen Valley exceeded our expectations. Beautiful location, spectacular views, excellent food, immaculate cleanliness and, above all, exceptionally pleasant staff. We left with very happy memories and would gladly return.
**Highly recommended — and if possible, reserve a Mont Blanc View room. The view from the balcony is truly special.**

Great views, kind staff, but poor food
• great location and views of Mt Blanc from east-facing rooms
• very friendly and welcoming staff
• good sauna & hammam
• good breakfast buffet (although in a badly-designed space)
• well-situated for hiking trails, cycle routes and visits to iconic sites (Chamonix, Aiguille du Midi, St Gervais, Annecy…)
Negatives :
• NOT a real 4-star hotel experience
• WAY over-priced
• Mt Blanc view rooms are above the restaurant and can be noisy until guests finish eating
• No air-conditioning in hotel/rooms
• VERY POOR evening meal selection especially for half-board guests staying more than a few nights
This last point really needs to be underlined because, overall, this hotel has a lot going for it but is SERIOUSLY let down by its food offering and the ergonomics of its restaurant space.
Please see attached photo of the “summer” menu. There are only 3 starters to choose from and one of them has a supplement of 3€. There is slightly more choice of main courses but again 2 of them have 3€ and 4€ supplements, as does one of the desserts. The evening menu stays the same all summer. If you stay more than a few nights you will run out of dishes to choose from, it’s a simple as that.
To have a menu which never changes is lazy. That it has a limited offering is poor service. But to charge your half-board guests supplements for dishes on this limited menu is just frankly insulting (especially given the price of staying here!). Also (judge for yourself) the menu is not the most inventive and is of brasserie level, not 4-star hotel level. Average presentation and no real creativity.
To top it all off, one night was designated as “Food Truck Evening” where, in lieu of a proper meal in the restaurant (remember, half-board guests have prepaid for a 3-course meal each night), we were given meal tickets to go outside onto the parking lot to get our “meal” from the truck. There was a choice of 2 burgers and 2 wraps (each had a veggie option), all served with fries or… nothing else. No starter. Dessert was either tiramisu or ice-cream (the same as on the half-board menu, so nothing different there).
We had wraps (which were just ok) but we heard two groups complaining that the burgers were not even cooked properly, and saw ourselves that this was the case when the gentleman near us showed the waitress. I have nothing against food trucks - you often find excellent offerings at them. But to have booked into a 4-star hotel and paid for 3-course meals, to have this poor-quality “meal” forced upon us was just a joke and another insult.
Finally, while the selection at breakfast is very good, the restaurant space is badly laid out and no thought has been given to how a breakfast buffet space actually needs to work (hint to management: people move around so give them space to do so).
The central spread of food is bordered on one side by the access to stairs and lift, on the other by some of the tables. The people at those tables constantly have other guests walking around them, bumping their chairs, saying “sorry”. You have no choice but to circulate around the buffet area which creates conflicting flows of people who want different things. These flows force you to pass the coffee machine. This machine is next to the bread station. This creates another bottleneck of guests because 1) you cannot avoid it even if you do not want coffee, 2) there is not enough space between coffee and bread and 3) the coffee machine takes ages to produce one coffee. There was often a line of 5-10 people waiting to make theirs, leaving no space for others to get bread or move around the buffet. This forced guests to walk amongst tables which themselves were too close together in the first place.
The stupid thing about this was that right next door is another restaurant room (doubling as a conference room if needed) that was never used and which could have easily housed the buffet, leaving the main restaurant area just for tables and more peace for those eating there. Every morning we watched (and endured ourselves) guests bumping into one another, trying to avoid tables and chairs, waiting to make their coffee, when a simple reorganization of the space (and, dare I suggest it, a second or third coffee machine?) would solve this.
Our overall feeling about our stay here was “disappointment”. Which really is a shame because the staff are sincere and genuinely friendly. You can tell they want you to enjoy your stay. However this is a hotel where the management are clearly trying to sell an experience but haven’t got some of the basics right.
Bottom line? Do not expect 4-star dining. Stay here on a bed & breakfast basis and eat elsewhere at night. There are plenty good restaurants to choose from in Combloux.

We are pleased that you enjoyed our location, the views of Mont Blanc, our team, the spa and the breakfast. We are nevertheless sorry that the dining experience had such a strong impact on your overall impression.
Our menu, which is available to view before booking, is intentionally concise and complemented by daily specials. We make this choice to focus on fresh, quality products and dishes prepared on site. We do, however, understand your comment about the lack of variety for guests staying several nights on half board, and this is something we can continue to improve.
I would also like to clarify one point regarding the Food Truck evening. This was offered as a summer event at no additional cost to our half-board guests. It was entirely optional, and guests who wished to keep their usual dinner at the restaurant were of course able to do so. We are therefore sorry that you felt this meal was imposed on you or that it replaced your half-board dinner.
Regarding the lack of air conditioning, this is a choice linked to our mountain environment and the generally cool summer climate in Combloux. We are nevertheless aware that some periods, such as the one we experienced this summer, can be particularly warm.
Finally, thank you for your kind words about our team. You yourself highlighted their genuine friendliness and willingness to make guests feel welcome, and this is something that matters greatly to us.
We are sorry that your stay left you with a feeling of disappointment despite the many aspects of the hotel that you enjoyed.

Interesting but..
A magnificent view of Mont Blanc from the restaurant.
A very pleasant breakfast.
But the superior rooms with a view of the parking lot should be avoided.
A bit of confusion in managing dinner reservations..
We will return for the kindness of the staff but in a room with a view of Mont Blanc.!

Fantastic view
The food is good and the service really nice. Lovely staff and very helpful.
However, I find the rooms are a little worn and the cleaning slowed a bit - especially in the bathroom. It would have been fine if there was a makeup mirror in the bathroom.
But a lovely place that is definitely worth a visit.
