Disappointing

Our stay was very pleasant & all the staff were excellent. But as a very frequent global traveller I think the owners/managers of the hotel either ran out of money or are woefully inexperienced at operating a hotel because they missed out on the opportunity to create the most luxurious hotel room in Haarlem. We chose the largest room, The Loft, which is huge but what a disappointment! The interior is cold, bland, empty, hollow, boring and characterless...and yet it could have been so incredible! It takes a lot to fill a large space and make it feel cosy and luxurious but there has been no attempt to do so. The whole space feels + looks cheap and as if no thought has gone into it. The walls are huge + bare, there is a large kitchen but no cooking hob or oven (so no way of preparing any food) but there is an enormous steel sink and a dishwasher - why?? The dining table + 6 chairs are dull, the two large sofa beds are ugly and uncomfortable. The lighting is absolutely atrocious (worst I've ever seen), and why are there 2 bathrooms? One of the bathrooms should have been a sauna. The curtains are cheap and boring. No bathrobes are supplied. No soft-close toilet seats - this is a basic requirement in any hotel these days. No plants or table lamps or floor lamps to make the space feel more comfortable. It's not possible to get fresh air into the room because none of the windows can open - why not? Terrible acoustics in the room and it's like being in a huge empty hall. Super hard mattress on the bed and terrible pillows. The furniture combination is very strange with an old-style wardrobe next to a small wall cabinet made from painted MDF. No phone to call reception (so presumably no room service?). There's a normal sized fridge but it was empty (also weird to have in a hotel room where it's not possible to cook), there's no mini-bar. It should have a sauna, 1 or 2 free-standing baths in the middle of the room. Room needs a complete makeover. I'd pay more than double if the room was luxurious. But sadly it's anything but luxurious. What an unfortunate missed opportunity to create what could be an incredible room. The interior designer should be fired but the operators of the hotel need a wake up call.
The restaurant service was excellent and the staff were friendly, and the food was OK but nothing special and the wine list was disappointing - no sauvignon blanc!?
Would we go back?
Maybe for a sundowner on the rooftop bar, but the hotel is not special enough to warrant a second visit and neither is the restaurant, sadly. Haarlem needs a high-end luxury boutique hotel with its own restaurant and bar and this place has all the ingredients, but it misses by a mile.

4 Star Hotel…5 Star Staff & Location

We stayed here 3 nights. Regarding the steep stairs, yes they are a hike. However, staff offered to carrying up our bags if needed. We passed since we were traveling with backpacks. They weren’t the first steep stairs we had encountered during this trip. Upon our arrival our room was having issues staying cool. This was also taking place during an exceptionally hot week. I give the front desk staff 5 stars because they continued to work on this problem until it was solved. They even brought up a much appreciated fan and ice water to our room. The location was a short walk to the city center. I would stay here again. Think of it as a charming historical adventure. Try something other than the cookie cutter hotel.

Nice place, but beware the lofts

I would really like to give Metzlr house a 5. It is well run, friendly with a convenient location, a nice restaurant and unique (in an old jail), but there really are some issues. If you book a 'loft' you get a modest, but OK room, with a steep staircase to a loft. This looks like fun, but there isn't much of a handrail and I had to pay a lot of attention each time and went up and down. I would not like to fall down those stairs. The bed, supposedly a king, was really two twins stuck together, with a high hard ridge in the middle. That was good because the beds were worn out, lumpy and soft and sleeping on the ridge was better. The shower made a horrible squeal when run and the fancy shower doors leaked so there was a lot of water on the bathroom floor. All of these things are fixable, and I hope they fix them.

Absolutely brilliant stay - I wouldn’t stay anywhere else! If you’re looking to visit Amsterdam then it’s a 12-15 minute walk to the station and much nicer than staying in Amsterdam! Haarlem is so beautiful and lovely to walk round with lots of great food spots! Our rooms were immaculate, the reception staff were SO helpful and welcoming, always there to ask questions and say hello! 10/10 - stay here!!
