A hotel in a central location that is in need of renovation and overpriced.
It is worth mentioning the breakfast, which was very fine, and also the very nice and attentive staff at the reception.

We take your comments about the condition of the room, the wear and tear, and the accessibility challenges very seriously. Our goal is always to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment, and it is disappointing to hear that we fell short in your case. You are entirely right that our upcoming renovations do not change your experience, and we completely understand your frustration regarding the value for money. I have shared your notes about the specific room details and maintenance issues directly with our team to ensure they are addressed immediately. I want to clarify that we do have wheelchair accessable rooms, if you let us know in adwance we will reserve one for you ahead of time.
On a positive note, I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed our breakfast and that our reception staff made a good impression with their kind and helpful service. I will be sure to pass on your compliments to them—they will be thrilled to know their efforts shone through.
We appreciate your honesty, as it helps us improve. We hope that if your travels ever bring you back this way after our updates, we might have the chance to provide you with the true experience we pride ourselves on.
Best regards,

The worst hotel we have ever stayed in.
We were given our rooms and off we went to fight the worlds most complex lift and room numbering system. I.e. Room 324 is on the 4th floor. Lift button 4a or 4b!
We got to our room and thought we had walked into a cleaners closet. It was almost pitch black. We turned around and left to get another room. Here is the part the bites!
The room faced into a noisy atrium. The single window was set into a 1m deep reveal which was painted dark green. Needless to say there was zero view, zero daylight, zero quality, zero luxury.
Having pointed out how poor the room was (you could tell they were used to similar complaints), we were moved. However the receptionist went on and on and has done in emails since to highlight that the room is classed as being 'internal'. What she ignored at the time and continues to ignore is that no room classified as deluxe should lack basics like natural light and a view of the sky. By all means sell the space as low grade but not deluxe.
So we were moved to a room where the air conditioning howled like a banshee unless you told it you wanted to overheat! Of course you then open the window onto a very noisy main road and a 2am nighclub. You really couldn't make this up. We just prayed for our two days to end so we could leave to go to stavanger. We did report the ac issue but nothing happened.
I don't mind an historic setting with rooms with character and a few bumps but you cannot oversell a space such as the corner inner atria rooms. No body should ever be sold those spaces without a serious health warning on the booking system. Turn them into private lounges or small cinema rooms for the adjacent bedrooms. Also, paint the atria white instead of dark green so you bounce a little bit of light into the spaces. Furthermore add some acoustic control to the atria.
As if the cleaners cupboard and ac wasn't enough, we were woken on the last night due to a gas leak. At midnight we found ourselves in the atria waiting to be let into our room or moved. To be fair, it was all handled professionally and politely but really hit home that the hotel is stretching the truth to say it currently offers deluxe rooms and experiences.
Big negative: don't tell the customer there is small print over and over when the issue is that the space should never be a room let alone a deluxe room.
Big positive: the bar lady was amazing and parking in the building a big help.
We have had our car parking reimbursed as a gesture of good will (whilst also being sent a photo of the small print). We have also been told the hotel is getting a refurb in september 2026. I say knock it down, give everyone a view of the sky, the sea and access to lifes basics such as daylight.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thorough and candid review of your stay. While I am delighted that our wonderful bar lady looked after you so well, I am incredibly sorry that the rest of your experience at Ernst felt like such a battle.
As a historic hotel, we love our heritage, but we also know it comes with unique architectural quirks. Our maze-like hallways and complex lift system can certainly feel like a puzzle when you first arrive—though it should never feel like a fight just to find your room.
More importantly, I want to apologize for how we handled the situation with your room assignment. You are entirely right: when a guest books a Deluxe experience, they expect a certain level of comfort, and a room that feels dark and enclosed—regardless of it being classified as an "internal" room in our system—simply does not deliver on that promise. Our team should have focused on making you comfortable rather than hiding behind the small print or booking terms. I am truly sorry that you felt patronized during an already frustrating moment.
To then move you to a room with a howling AC unit, only to face the weekend noise of Kristiansand's nightlife when opening the window, is far from the relaxing stay we wanted for you. Combined with the midnight gas leak evacuation, it is completely understandable that you were just counting down the hours until you could leave for Stavanger.
I genuinely appreciate your constructive ideas for our atrium. Your thoughts on the acoustic control, the dark green paint, and reimagining those deep corner spaces are incredibly sharp, and I have shared them directly with our design team as we plan for our major September 2026 refurbishment. We know we have some historic limitations to iron out, and feedback like yours is exactly what we need to get it right.
We are glad we could at least take care of your parking, but we know it doesn't buy back a good night's sleep. We would love the chance to welcome you back, on us ofcourse, after our 2026/2027 transformation to show you a version of Clarion Hotel Ernst that truly feels deluxe. Aircon problems is on the agenda, as well as acoustic and away with all the grey. You can email me on tonje.godger@strawberry.no

Overall good, but poor condition of family rooms.
Breakfast was amazing, a lot of choices for everyone something.
Location very good, just a pity that the windows where you have a view over the sea are blocked with large objects.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at Clarion Hotel Ernst. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the amazing breakfast and appreciated our prime location.
However, we sincerely regret that the condition of the family rooms did not meet your expectations. Your comments about the broken items and obstructed views will be noted as we strive to enhance our guests' experiences. We agree that our amazing property needs some extra love and attention and can happily inform that we are starting renovation of the whole property in september. We will continue to be open, and finish in the end om May 2027,
We will pass on your kind words about our service to the team. Thank you once again for your insights, and we hope to welcome you back in the future.
