Historic building tastefully renovated
Good to see local gifts available. Portuguese food including local jams and jellies. Lovely red wine from nearby village as house carafe.

Old Bishop´s House
It´s an old big house that belonged to the bishop; it has a pretty garden with a little pool. Our room was big and clean, and had a balcony facing the garden.
The staff were very very polite. We were the only guests.
The breakfast is complete and enough; they cook their own jams (abobora (pumpkin) and nut was my favourite). We had a dinner too, and the meals were really goods and tasty.
We choose this hotel as a "headquarters" for byrdwatching activities; there are thousands of byrds all around this towns and villages; we went to Miranda do Douro for byrdwatching with the amazing Pedro of "douropulacanhada.com", who was a more than perfect guide and host, he was just a friend. But indeed, it´s quite far away from Miranda.
I had the sensation of being in a new place wich is starting, and there are details that they should polish, comfort details I mean, for deserving to be a 4 stars hotel.

NOT a 4-star place
The original 18th century building was the bishop's palace, and there is a small chapel adjoining the manor. The 8 or 9 hotels rooms are all in a modern (1960s?) addition that stretches out behind the manor. They are sparse, cold, damp. It was unusually cold when we were there (April 27), and the small heater in the room did not cut the chill. The common area with big TV was also freezing and damp, and there is nothing historic or traditional about its furnishings. Absolutely no charm. The main dining room has a fireplace and a slice of charm. We ate dinner in the hotel once and,to be fair, it was fine, though nothing special) The breakfast room is in the old part of the manor and has a nicer feel. But the breakfast itself was bad.
The man who is now running the hotel is very nice, helpful, and eager to give suggestions about places to visit, so I do feel bad slamming the place. The accommodations would be minimally acceptable in warm weather, but we didn't enjoy huddling near the heater or under the blanket in the charm-less room.
The nearby town of Miranda do Douro has a big modern hotel overlooking the river. We ate there once and the food was not great, nor was there much in the way of charm going on in that place, but I think I'd pick it over the Solar dos Marcos.

O Hotel Rural esteve alugado a uma Empresa denominada Fernando Ferreira Unipessoal Lda, desde Janeiro de 2011 até Dezembro de 2012, infelizmente durante a sua Gestão deixou o Hotel Rural Solar dos Marcos num estado Lastimável, realizando uma gestão Fraudulenta, deixando as instalaçoes em completa degradação, sem providenciar a correcta Higiene requerida e obrigatória, degradando os equipamentos deixados a sua responsabilidade e Degradando a Imagem do mesmo Hotel. Devo salientar também que a mesma Empresa: Fernando Ferreira Unipessoal Lda deixou diversas dividas por pagar em vários Operadores Turisticos e que os Proprietários tiveram de cancelar o arrendamento da unidade hoteleira por razões obvias.
Lamento profundamente que a Senhora tenha saido defraudada aquando da sua reserva no Hotel Rural Solar dos Marcos.
Apesar de não ter sido nossa responsabilidade directa, deixo o Convite a esta cliente a nos vir visitar e confirmar directamente a veracidade dos meus argumentos. Estou disposto a OFERECER uma noite totalmente grátis á mesma cliente.

Very nice staff
But I must mention some things that we didn´t appreciate: the stairs which connect the garage to the reception and the stairs between floors were never cleaned. From the first to the last day we saw the very same dirt and cigarette butts on them.
The garage key sometimes didn´t work and the gate stayed open.
Our room was cleaned, but for several times the lady forgot to throw the garbage away and didn´t clean the ashtray. She also forgot to remove the empty glasses. We "collected" 3 empty whiskey balloons in our room. We were 3 persons and never got a third bath towel! Our sofa was supposed to be a bed, but it was totally broken. We couldn´t even seat in there to watch tv. The alternative was a very narrow extra bed.
There was not many variety at breakfast and some things should look more homemade, but what really bothered us were the flies walking on top of ham and cheese.
Despite all this, we consider this is a nice place. The manager only needs to pay more attention to this kind of details.
