Unkept Hotel
The hotel is situated in a picturesque fishing town that serves as a backdrop that instantly gives this hotel an extra star based solely on location and views.
The hotel in itself is small with only 6 or 7 rooms.
Staff includes a husband and wife team and 1 room attendant.
Breakfast is an added cost of 5 euro which consists of coffee from a machine that uses powdered milk and a few donuts/magdalenas bought from the local supermarket.
Rooms are clean enough for a 2 star status although ageing equipment like TV’s and AC don’t work. Some cupboards won’t close fully, light switches are held on with duct tape.
Our 1st stay was better than our 2nd stay even though I was ravaged by some sort of insect that left permanent scars on my torso because I slept on their sofa bed.
2nd stay was eventful, we arrived to a baking hot room (unseasonably warm tbf) and switched on the AC. The AC wasn’t very strong and fan was virtually non existent.
After about 30 mins of AC it started to drip from the vent up on the ceiling. These drips became drops.
We tried to switch off the AC but it was too hot so we decided to tell the manager.
The manager was apologetic but did absolutely nothing about it. We continued to use our own bucket for the drip and had to stay in the room due to previous bookings and a full hotel.
I’d like to point out that I am not one for confrontations. I was on holiday and tried to keep positive the entire time as these things happen.
The following day they scheduled someone to fix it. He came in while we were showering after some time at the beach so we had to get out. I didn’t really care as it was a necessary evil to solve the AC issue. The gentlemen was quick enough and we returned to our room.
2 hours later the same issue began again. It continued to drip and cause problems.
I told the front desk and they tried to contact the repair fella to come back. During this time the entire ceiling was swollen and full of water. It was at this point that I feared for my kids’ safety and requested another room once again.
Apparently this time around they had one available and moved us into a room that caters to those who use wheel chairs.
More importantly it was quite and the floors weren’t slippery.
As soon as we moved room I heard a loud bang. The ceiling around the vent in the “problem” room had collapsed.
It was at this point that the owner finally closed the room off permanently.
This was our last night. 3 nights of which only one was normal.
That following morning during check-out they said they were sorry and gave us free breakfast. We were charged premium summer rates.
I’m not one to look for freebies, this is their source of income and I liked them very much but to offer a guest store bought plastic wrapped croissants when you did little to nothing to make our stay bearable was very poor.
The owners wife who also manages the hotel was frustrated as they put in the HVAC system 10 years ago at a massive cost but was surprised when I told her these systems needed to be serviced and checked regularly.
All in all an unpleasant experience more so as my mother is from the town over and I hold the area close to my heart. I know the area well and this was very disappointing.
Pros:
Location- can’t be beat. San Sebastián is 35 mins away and Bilbao is under an hour away. The views are incredible and the town is friendly and fun.
Staff- Staff is friendly and does what it can considering circumstances.
Cons:
Management- They’re hardly ever on the property even though they live on the top floor.
Talking to the owner and you feel like he’s doing YOU a favour.
Hotel- The hotel is an old building (to be expected) reformed from a ship building edifice, to a canary, a restaurant and finally a Hotel.
The hotel needs renovating. It’s full of mould and needs a lot of TLC.
Breakfast is also poor considering local fresh produce that is available 100ft away.

Atentamente

Fabulous Peaceful Place
It was a perfect getaway. The hotel was great, clean, fresh and the location had amazing views. We had a balcony room and sat out each evening, it was gorgeous. The paintings on the walls in each room were amazing too.
No complaints about anything, other than wish we had of stayed longer!
The biggest downfall for us was the steep slope to get down to the water and back up to the hotel.
We plan to visit again in the summer.

Dirty !
But when we arrived, it was really dirty : the floor, the kitchen, the bathroom ... dirty and smelling badly ! We complained about this with the (male) owner, who clearly didn't understand what hygiene means, as he started to awkwardly rub over the dirtiest stains of the microwave when we drew his attention to the poor hygienic situation. We did not accept this and the owner made his Bulgarian (female) housekeeper come to clean, which she did ... but still far below any hotel standards. The next day, the cleaning was better. Just an example to show how bad it was : we found in the kitchen cabinet a glass that still was full of ashes (one of the previous renters probably had been using it as an ashtray ...). Unacceptable ! Wifi did not work ... at all ! If well run and - especially - well cleaned, this hotel could become a nice place to stay for a few nights, but as long as the hygienic standards of the owner and his housekeeper do not change radically, it is a good idea to avoid going here. Oh yes, there are 2 airco units : one stinks like hell, the other one makes noise like hell. But at least you can choose between both ...
