Magical Getaway♥️
Our stay at Ferndale Retreat was nothing short of magical. Spending 3 wonderful days there was exactly what we needed for a truly relaxing and soothing weekend.
Being away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life made it so special. Sitting on the deck, taking in the breathtaking views while listening to slow music, was incredibly peaceful and mind-relaxing. Every moment felt calm, refreshing, and rejuvenating.
A heartfelt thank you to Gordy and the entire team for their warm hospitality and excellent service. They made our stay even more memorable. We left feeling refreshed, happy, and already looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommended for anyone seeking peace, comfort, and a perfect getaway!

One Step Closer to Heaven
Ferndale Retreat is truly one of the best places to experience comfort, serenity, and nature at its finest in the misty Knuckles mountain range.
My husband and I stayed here for two nights on a full-board basis over a weekend, and from the moment we arrived, everything felt special. As newlyweds, we received such a warm and thoughtful welcome, and honestly, we would give the entire experience a 100/10.
The property is beautifully designed to blend human presence with nature, while still offering all the comfort you need. It was super clean, peaceful (just you, birds, wind, and mountains/ no other noise at all), and well-equipped with 24-hour power supply, Wi-Fi, and hot water, in each room or chalet which is not available in any other place around Knuckles.
The staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout our stay. Lordy - the Resident Manager was very professional and friendly. I had a special request to have lunch at the helipad location, and despite the unpredictable weather, they took note of it and somehow made it happen. That level of care made the experience even more memorable.
The food was absolutely top-notch. What made it even more special was that their dishes are prepared using in-house grown produce and spices, giving every meal a fresh, authentic, and homely taste. The Sri Lankan rice and curry, welcome sweets were super delicious, and the homemade cardamom ice cream was definitely the showstopper.
We also did the High Knuckles hike with Charaka as our guide, and he was amazing. He was very knowledgeable about the mountain range, nature, and the surroundings. He also kindly captured many beautiful moments for us without us even having to ask. During the hike, my shoe broke unexpectedly, but he made sure I was safe and comfortable by stitching it so I could continue.
One small tip: try to check in before evening, as the weather can change at any time. We visited on June 6th and reached quite late, around 8:30 p.m. The area was extremely misty, and it was quite difficult to see the road clearly.
Overall, Ferndale Retreat gave us one of the most peaceful, comfortable, and unforgettable stays. If you are looking for a serene escape surrounded by nature, amazing food, warm hospitality, and true Knuckles beauty, this place is THE ONE and surely worth it for the value you spend!

Wow what an experience it was to stay here! It is so off the beaten track that you need collecting by the hotel staff in a very heavy duty jeep because a normal car stands no chance of getting there. It is the most peaceful place I have ever been with the most amazing views of the mountains. I will say it is so remote that you can’t just pop out for lunch etc so make sure you’re prepared with things to keep you entertained for your stay.
The food was all incredible and the staff were some of the most attentive yet. Because it is such a small hotel with only four pods they really look after you and everything is tailored exactly to you from menu choices to timings etc. All the staff were so kind and really went above and beyond to offer PERFECT service. I would recommend this hotel for the staff alone, the amazing location just makes it even better.
We did the waterfall trek with one of their staff too which was great. He was very knowledgable pointing out different plants and stopping for us to try the wild cardamom, berries etc.

A Tranquil Luxury Escape in the Knuckle
Ferndale Retreat in Knuckles was an absolutely wonderful experience. Located right at the edge of the misty Knuckles forest, the place offers a perfect blend of tranquility and comfort. Waking up surrounded by clouds, fresh mountain air, and the sounds of nature was truly magical.
The service was extremely warm and welcoming, making the stay feel very comfortable and relaxed. The food was another highlight — unique, fresh, and beautifully prepared with local flavors that you don’t easily find elsewhere.
One of the best experiences was the guided mountain trekking they arranged for us. It took us deep inside the Knuckles forest where we were able to see many different flora and fauna endemic to Sri Lanka. It was an unforgettable nature experience.
If you are looking for a peaceful escape where tranquility meets luxury, Ferndale Retreat is the perfect place. Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone who wants to disconnect and enjoy the beauty of the Knuckles mountains.

Can't wait to go back
Had such a great time at Ferndale Retreat! Our trip didn’t start perfectly since we had to wait about 2.5 hours because of road construction, but that was quickly forgotten the moment we arrived.
Big thanks to Jason, Charaka and the team for the amazing hospitality — they really made us feel at home. The food was amazing and super fresh (most of it comes straight from their own garden!). Every meal was hearty and delicious.
They also provide a shuttle service from the pick-up point to the hotel. It's about a 20-minute off-road adventure on a 4WD — honestly part of the fun and adds to the whole experience!
The place itself is peaceful and surrounded by nature, and we loved hanging out with their super friendly resident dogs. We also did the Corbett’s Gap hike with Charaka and Jason on our anniversary day — such an incredible experience and definitely one of our favorite memories.
Just a heads-up if you’re visiting: be ready for leeches on the wet grounds.
Can’t wait to go back again soon. We'll definitely do the High Knuckles Trek next time.
