We salute The Salutation

The Salutation exudes class whether you are staying or calling in for a snack, afternoon tea or dinner. Owners Tom and Amelia have hit on a winning formula. The food here is second to none - everything so fresh. A particular winner is any of the fish dishes - you can actually buy it at the the hotel's own fish counter - and seasonal veg. Wonderful. Our room was stylish, en-suite with nice shower and toiletries, and a super comfy bed which made for a relaxing and peaceful night's sleep following a dinner my wife and myself rate as the best we have eaten anywhere. Breakfast was top notch also - crab omelette for my wife, kippers for me. Delicious. The staff are all lovely too. Highly recommended, we salute The Salutation.

Perfect

We recently spent the weekend in Topsham, visiting friends and exploring. We can’t praise the Salutation Inn enough. Ideally situated, the staff are all so lovely and friendly. The accommodation is spacious, well appointed and really comfortable. Whilst we only had breakfast the food was great, the help yourself kitchen for residents was a lovely added bonus! We would highly recommend!

Our favourite Devon Hotel

Our fifth stay at The Salutation Inn. Always a friendly welcome. Nice comfortable room with all amenities, quiet even though it overlooks the High Street. Superb breakfast, varied choices freshly made.

Exceedingly poor value

We went for dinner here, having previously having a good lunch about 2 years ago or so. The service was reasonable, not outstanding or anything special. The menu had a fair choice, but again nothing outstanding. But when it comes to value, this is where it all goes wrong. My own main course, £36 was tiny, you could say a largish starter at best. Nothing with it so had to order a portion of chips at £5.50 extra. There were no expensive ingredients in it, just basic meat. Other dishes consumed were also not worth the asking price, half a tiny lobster minus the claw £25 or add a green salad and chips £35, again no claw. No bread was served or even offered for any of the dishes. The wine was again outrageously priced, £28 for a large glass of Cloudy Bay!
In addition there was a 12.5% service charge added to everything, although this is discretionary, many people are either too embarrassed or afraid to ask it to be removed. We will not be going again!

Too expensive

Just eye wateringly expensive! A modest lunch for 3, with one glass of wine and no desserts should not cost over £100...in Topsham. The food was fine but not exceptional so just too much money. Maybe that is the reason for a pretty much empty restaurant at lunchtime in summer?
