Old fashioned, but big heart

Hotel Astor in Perugia: vintage 80s furniture included in the price... but the staff is so nice that you forget about the retro details right away. Two pleasant nights, promoted! And, contrary to other negative reviews, we enjoyed it.

They asked me, "But why there?"

Astor
The hotel is clearly managed by foreigners who do not know the Italian standard of personal cleanliness very well (see toilet paper provided as the only relief after having ……, the bidet is in fact present but not the related towels). The staff, however, was very kind, even the one who answered me that I had to settle for toilet paper but not the spare roll (our friends ended up using their own paper tissues for this) and that towels were not provided. The same worker then, in reality, also called me a liar when I complained about the presence of the same towels for 3 days. Well?! Unfortunately, the bathrooms, both ours and our friends', did not have a hook or anything to hang them on, and in fact, they did not dry. Two of us used the window handle, one used something inside the room, and another used a remnant of a hook on the wall. They would have needed a daily change, but they asserted, verbally, that they would be changed every two days, a statement that conflicted with the sign posted in the bathrooms, which, as is now always the case, recommended keeping them for more than one day and leaving them on the floor to request a change. In fact, our friends did just that and found them exactly where they left them: on the floor!
Shower door that wouldn't close, residual water on the floor from a hole in the door, semi-clogged bidet (I used it, miraculously drying myself with a tissue), hot water difficult to adjust, a crooked and very high shelf for shower essentials. The lack of replacement plastic cups, toilet paper, detergents, and towels that I complained about one day was patched up with a handful of detergents and that's it.
Three people, local professionals we used, were truly amazed by our choice of hotel, not so much for the aforementioned things, but for the location. And in fact, the proximity to the station led to daily encounters with foreigners, probably not exactly integrated, not exactly reassuring. One day we steered clear because of a bitter argument in progress, another day we couldn't help but notice someone preparing heroin on the bench. For the rest, the sight of derelicts with crutches, beer bottles, worn-out clothes, etc., could only break our hearts. Never bothered by anyone, though, in reality. Furthermore, on the positive side, the proximity to the MiniMetro is worth noting, which allowed us to reach the center comfortably and quickly. Dated hotel but with well-redone windows.
Can you expect more from a 2-star hotel? Yes. Would I go back? No.

Clean and modern bathroom. Clean room. Courteous and pleasant front desk. The areas outside the rooms need an update/refresh. Steps from the train station so very convenient but not the most inviting neighborhood. I had no problems. My single room was tiny but it worked well for me. The shower is tiny.

Impossible to sleep; noise is continuous, most is traffic but a lot of yelling, etc. inside and out. Also flashing lights

Friendly staff and good location by train station. Ridiculously small room that was freezing cold. Bed had a single sheet. Shower was freezing cold. “Free toiletries” is a bar of hard low quality soap that doesn’t clean well. Very clean though. Overall 2.5 or 3/5
